Acesa desde Junho de 1901, actualmente está localizada dentro do Quartel de Bombeiros #6 na 4550 East Avenue, Livermore, na Califórnia, mantida pelo Corpo de Bombeiros Livermore-Pleasanton. A lâmpada foi oficialmente reconhecida pelo Livro de Recordes Mundiais do Guinness, pela Ripley's Believe It or Not! e pela General Electric como a lâmpada acesa há mais tempo no mundo.

Confrontando Críticos # Confronting Critics

Imagina: Tens uma óptima ideia nova. Estás preparado, mas trata-se ainda de um território desconhecido, ainda é um passo de fé. De repente, a pessoa que esperavas ser o teu maior apoio torna-se a tua maior crítica. O que fazes quando os gritos dos críticos parecem abafar o chamado de Deus?

Quando David, um jovem pastor inexperiente, se aproximou de Golias, ele encontrou mais do que alguns críticos. Desde a família ciumenta a um Rei incerto e cobarde, oposição e dúvida vieram de todas as direcções. Como é que David respondeu? Ele não ficou zangado nem defensivo. Ele não discutiu nem se justificou. Em vez de se enredar na emoção, ele concentrou-se no chamado de Deus e avançou na fé.

Haverá sempre oposição quando damos um passo de fé ou corremos atrás de um novo desafio. Mas a chave para lembrar-nos é a seguinte: Não deixes que os teus críticos te distraiam do chamado de Deus. Não te deixes perder na amargura ou ressentimento. Não deixes que a inveja e o ciúme dos outros te deixem preso. Simplesmente continua avançando, recordando que quando Deus te coloca diante de um desafio, este desafio torna-se de Deus. Deus simplesmente pede que apareças e confies n'Ele, não importa o quão alto os críticos gritem. Avança na fé e observa com espanto quando Deus te ajuda a superar desafios "gigantes".

Imagine: You have a great new idea. You’re prepared, but this is still unknown territory, it’s still a step of faith. Suddenly, the person you expected to be your biggest cheerleader becomes your biggest critic. What do you do when the shouts of critics seem to drown out the call of God?

When David, a young and inexperienced shepherd boy, stepped up to face Goliath, he encountered more than a few critics. From jealous family to an uncertain and cowardly King, opposition and doubt came from every direction. How did David respond? He didn’t become angry or defensive. He didn’t argue or justify himself. Instead of getting tangled up in emotion, he focused on God’s call and moved forward in faith.

There will always be opposition when we take a step of faith or run after a new challenge. But the key to remember is this: Don’t let your critics distract you from God’s call. Don’t let yourself get lost in bitterness or resentment. Don’t let envy and jealousy of others keep you stuck. Simply continue to move forward, remembering that when God puts you before a challenge, that challenge becomes God’s. God simply asks that you show up and trust Him, no matter how loudly the critics shout. Move forward in faith and watch with amazement as God helps you overcome "giant" challenges.

A Crise Da Meia-Idade # Life's Halftime Crisis

“Se a primeira metade da vida tem tudo a ver com sucesso” – encontrá-lo, conquistá-lo e criar um nome para nós; "então a segunda metade é sobre o que é importante", afirma o autor Bob Buford. Será que estas perguntas são familiares: Será que a minha vida é importante? Qual é o objectivo de todo este sucesso?

O desafio para muitos, especialmente os homens que enfrentam a meia-idade, está na busca do que é importante. O problema, no entanto, tende a ser com o que estamos a procurar. Quando procuramos por aquilo que importa nos lugares errados, podemos lutar com sentimentos de desilusão, vazio e frustração onde as nossas vidas nos levaram. A boa notícia é que esta "crise da meia-idade" não precisa de terminar na insatisfação e inquietação. A meia-idade pode ser uma oportunidade de auto-reflexão e reorientação, tornando a segunda metade da vida muito melhor do que a primeira.

Então, qual é a chave para descobrir o significado da vida e o que é finalmente importante? É um relacionamento com Deus. Quer te chames de Cristão ou não, reserva um momento para reflectir sobre as tuas prioridades. Tem a carreira ou o dinheiro se tornado a força motriz por detrás da tua vida? Talvez seja a busca por prazer na esperança de encontrar valor e aquilo que importa. No final, todas estas actividades nunca serão realmente satisfatórias. É somente através de um relacionamento com Cristo que descobrirás a verdadeira alegria, satisfação e o que é importante.

Se as tuas prioridades ficaram fora de sincronia, pede a Deus o Seu poder para reorientar as tuas prioridades de volta a Ele. Porque quanto mais olhares para Deus em busca do que é importante, mais descobrirás quão importante é que a segunda metade da vida pode ser!

"If the first half of life is all about success" – finding it, achieving it, and making a name for ourselves; "then the second half is about significance", author Bob Buford states. Do these questions sound familiar: Does my life matter? What’s the purpose of all this success?

The challenge for many, especially men facing midlife, is searching for significance. The problem, however, tends to be with where we’re looking. When we look for significance in the wrong places, we can wrestle with feelings of disillusionment, emptiness and frustration at where our lives have taken us. The good news is, this "midlife crisis" doesn’t have to end in un-fulfillment and restlessness. Life’s halftime can be an opportunity for self-reflection and reorientation making life’s second half far better than the first.

So what’s the key to discovering the meaning of life and ultimate significance? It’s a relationship with God. Whether you call yourself a Christian or not, take a moment to reflect on your priorities. Has career or money become the driving force behind your life? Maybe it’s the search for pleasure in the hopes of finding value and meaning. In the end, all of these pursuits will never truly satisfy. It’s only through a relationship with Christ that you will discover true joy, fulfillment and ultimate significance.

If your priorities have gotten out of sync, ask God by His power to re-orient your priorities back to Him. Because the more you look to God for significance, the more you’ll discover just how significant life’s second half can be!
