A Pedra de Toque # The Touchstone

Uma pedra de toque é um pedaço de pedra escura, finamente granulada, que é utilizada para a determinação da qualidade de metais macios. Usado principalmente na Grécia antiga, as pedras de toque forneciam um meio para comparar a pureza de metais preciosos como o ouro ou a prata, cujo processo é chamado de ensaio. O ensaiador raspava uma amostra pura do metal precioso em toda a pedra de toque, deixando um risco, e de seguida, ele raspava o metal a ser testado pela pedra, deixando outro risco. O resíduo deixado sobre a pedra de toque poderia ser comparado, permitindo, assim, ao ensaiador determinar a qualidade e pureza do novo mineral, se de alto ou baixo grau.

A Escritura é a nossa pedra de toque. Deus é o autor e inspirou através das canetas de homens fiéis revelando-Se a nós. Ele mostrou-nos a Sua santidade, a Sua perfeição, a Sua graça, a Sua justiça, todas estas facetas de Si mesmo e o Seu carácter. Devemos, como um pedaço de ouro que está a ser testado, riscar-nos através da pedra da Bíblia. Em vez de comparar-nos uns com os outros, devemos olhar para a palavra de Deus como a medida das nossas vidas.

Não deitemos fora a nossa alegria comparando-nos com a vida de seres humanos imperfeitos, mas em vez disso devemos comparar-nos com Cristo para uma verdadeira medida do fruto espiritual. Abramos a nossa Bíblia hoje e deixemos a palavra de Deus incentivar-nos e restaurar-nos.

A touchstone is a tablet of dark stone, finely grained, that is used for determining the quality of soft metals. Primarily used in ancient Greece, touchstones provided a means for comparing the purity of precious metals such as gold or silver, this process is referred to as assaying. The assayer would draw a pure sample of the precious metal across the touchstone, leaving a streak, he would then draw the metal being tested across the stone, leaving another streak. The residue left on the touchstone would be compared, thus allowing the assayer to determine the quality and purity of the new ore, whether high grade or low.

Scripture is our touchstone. God has authored and inspired it through the pens of faithful men to reveal Himself to us. He has shown us His holiness, His perfection, His grace, His justice, all of these facets of Himself and His character. We must, like a piece of gold being tested, draw ourselves across the stone of the Bible. Instead of comparing ourselves with each other, we should look to God’s word as the measure of our lives.

Don’t give your joy away to comparison against the lives of imperfect human beings, but instead compare yourself with Christ for a true measure of spiritual fruit. Open your bible today and let the word of God encourage and restore you.
