Verdadeira Liberdade # True Freedom

As leis de Deus, as regras e os ensinamentos de Jesus podem parecer como uma espécie de camisa de força para aqueles que não são seguidores de Jesus. Estas regras podem até parecer que inibem uma pessoa de ser ele próprio, divertindo-se ou viver a vida na sua plenitude. No entanto, o autor do famoso Salmo 119 tem uma visão diferente sobre esta noção. O autor escreveu que guardar a lei de Deus (fazer o que a Bíblia e Jesus disse), vai permitir-nos caminhar em lugares espaçosos. Outras traduções usam o termo liberdade. Isto pode parecer contraditório, mas, quando se olha para o que a Bíblia estabelece para as nossas vidas, vemos que ela nos ajuda a viver uma vida livre do salário do pecado.

Não somos mais escravos do pecado (Romanos 6:17)! Por sua vez, estas supostas escolhas de estilo de vida que "libertam" já não podem enredar, ou ter domínio sobre nós. Falem com um sem-abrigo viciado em drogas na rua, e perguntem se ele sente que tem liberdade e independência na vida. Perguntem a um alcoólico preso que matou uma mãe e filha ao conduzir embriagado se ele ou ela está livre. Falem com uma jovem que tem que tomar a decisão se quer manter, abortar, ou desistir da sua quase filha porque não pode dar-se ao luxo de criar uma criança. Será que estas situações soam a liberdade para si?

Charles Spurgeon disse sobre este versículo: "O caminho da santidade não é um trilho para os escravos, mas o caminho do Rei para homens livres." Jesus disse que veio para nos dar vida e para nos dar vida em abundância (João 10:10). Uma vida abundante não é uma lista de regras e restrições, com a intenção de nos manter presos, mas uma liberdade n'Ele para viver como as pessoas que fomos criados para ser.

God’s laws, rules, and Jesus’ teachings can appear as a type of straight jacket to those who are not followers of Jesus. These rules may even seem to inhibit a person from being themselves, having fun, or living life to its fullest. The author of the famous Psalm 119 has a different view on this notion, however. The author wrote that keeping God’s law (doing what the Bible and Jesus said) will allow us to walk in wide places. Other translations use liberty or even freedom. This can seem contradictory, but, as one looks at what the Bible lays out for our lives, we see that it helps us to live a life that is free from the wages of sin.

We are no longer slaves to sin (Romans 6:17)! In turn, these supposed "freeing" lifestyle choices can no longer ensnare, or have dominion over us. Talk to a homeless drug addict on the street, and ask if he feels like he has liberty and freedom in life. Ask an alcoholic in jail who’s just killed a mother and daughter while driving drunk if he or she is free. Speak with a young lady who has to make the decision whether to keep, abort, or give up her soon to be daughter because she can’t afford to raise a child. Do these situations ring of freedom to you?

Charles Spurgeon said about this verse, "The way of holiness is not a track for slaves, but the King’s highway for freemen." Jesus said that he came to give us life and to give us life abundantly (John 10:10). An abundant life is not a list of rules and restrictions with the intent of keeping us locked up, but a freedom in him to live as the people we were made to be.

O SS América foi um transatlântico construído em 1940 e projectado pelo notável arquitecto naval William Francis Gibbs. Ele teve muitos nomes durante os 54 anos desde a sua construção e o seu naufrágio em 1994. O navio tinha um comprimento de 722 pés 3 mm (220,14 m).

Prendas Que Mudam a Vida # Life Changing Gifts

Recentemente estava a assistir a um reality show na televisão. No final do programa, os funcionários da empresa receberam prendas com base no desempenho que eles tinham tido na competição. O empregado que particularmente me chamou a atenção recebeu uma prenda em dinheiro de 10.000 Euros. E ainda um irmão mais novo da mesma família também recebeu uma prenda em dinheiro de 10.000 Euros. Estes dois jovens haviam estado sem casa durante uma grande parte das suas vidas. O empregado reconheceu como tinham dado a volta às suas vidas e fizeram o melhor de uma situação má na sua família e queriam honrá-los com algo que eles nunca tinham tido. O jovem que recebeu a primeira prenda de 10.000 Euros estava emocionado e exclamou que se tratava de um "prenda de mudar a vida".

Pensei para mim mesmo, como gostava de dar a alguém uma prenda de mudar a vida. É claro que estava a pensar em dinheiro, mas naquele momento Deus revelou-me as prendas que mudam a vida que eu tinha recebido e que não eram dinheiro. Deus também trouxe-me à mente as prendas que mudam a vida das quais eu tinha feito parte em dar.

É que muitas vezes equacionamos prendas com dinheiro ou valores materiais, mas as prendas que verdadeiramente mudam a vida não têm euros, mas têm um valor eterno. Amor, amizade, conselhos e um ouvido atento, são exemplos de prendas de mudar a vida que podem apontar para a prenda suprema de Jesus na cruz. A Palavra de Deus está cheia de prendas de mudar a vida, prendas para darmos e prendas para recebermos.

Recently I was watching a reality TV show. At the end of the program the employees of the company received gifts based on how well they had done in the competition. The employee that particularly caught my attention received a cash gift of $10,000. On top of that a younger sibling in the same family also received a $10,000 cash gift. These two young people had been homeless for quite a portion of their life. The employer recognized how they had turned their life around and made the best of a bad situation in their family and wanted to honor them with something they had never had. The young man that received the first $10,000 was overwhelmed and exclaimed that this was a "life changing gift".

I thought to myself, how I would like to give someone a life changing gift. Of course I was thinking money but at that very moment God revealed to me the life changing gifts that I had received that were not money. God also brought to mind the life changing gifts that I had been a part of giving.

You see, we often equate gifts with money or material value but the real life changing gifts don’t have dollar signs in front of them, but have an eternal value. Love, friendship, advice, and a listening ear are all examples of life changing gifts that can point to the ultimate gift of Jesus on the cross. God’s word is full of life changing gifts, gifts for us to give and gifts for us to receive.
