Foi uma paragem de descanso rápida. Sentado junto ao poço, Jesus espera enquanto os Seus discípulos vão à cidade encontrar o almoço. É quando ela chega. Uma mulher da cidade vizinha vem para tirar água. A esta hora do dia, neste calor, a maioria evita o poço. Mas, para esta mulher, ela prefere assim. Sossegado. Sozinha. Ninguém para condenar e ninguém por perto para julgar. Sabes, ela é conhecida em toda a cidade, mas não de uma boa maneira. A sua reputação e a sua história estão cheias de vergonha.
Em breve descobrimos que esta mulher está com sede, mas não apenas de água, algo mais. No fundo, ela sente-se vazia, insatisfeita. Aprendemos que ela está a procurar satisfação nos outros, nos relacionamentos. Uma e outra vez, ela tentou encontrar o que ela acredita irá satisfazer o seu coração e alma, mas está tudo vazio. A sua história está cheia de sonhos despedaçados e esperanças destruídas, bagagem e dor.
Para Jesus, isto não é surpresa. Ele conhece a sua história e Ele resolve tudo. Cinco maridos e o homem com quem ela vive agora não é o seu marido. Nada está escondido de Jesus. Não há segredos aqui. E o que ela faz quando percebe que Jesus conhece a sua história? Ela corre ou esconde-se? Simplesmente o contrário. Ela está animada. Ela quer saber mais. É como se ela fosse de alguma forma libertada.
Mas, como pode ser isto? Como é possível que revelar toda a bagagem diante de Jesus leva a sentir-se satisfeito e preenchido? Uma palavra, Graça. Em vez de ser julgada ou condenada, ela é amada. E isto é o Evangelho de Jesus Cristo, a graça que cobre o pecado e o amor que substitui a vergonha. Somente quando experimentarmos o amor e a graça de Jesus Cristo, os nossos corações e almas ficarão verdadeiramente satisfeitos. Já não precisamos de correr e esconder, porque tudo o que fizemos foi coberto por tudo o que Jesus fez. Finalmente, os desejos mais profundos dos nossos corações podem ser preenchidos.
Se a vergonha é a força motriz da tua vida, nunca ficarás satisfeito. Se estás a lutar com vergonha e indignidade por causa da tua história, pára de correr. Vem antes a Jesus com a tua história e vê o que acontece quando a tua vergonha encontra a Sua graça. Esta é a satisfação e a alegria que as nossas almas esperam. Esta é a boa notícia do Evangelho!

It was a quick rest stop. Sitting by the well, Jesus waits as His disciples run into town to find lunch. That’s when she arrives. A woman from the nearby town come to draw water. At this time of day, in this heat, most avoid the well. But, for this woman, she prefers it this way. Quiet. Alone. No one to condemn and no one around to judge. You see, she is well known around town, but not in a good way. Her reputation and her story are full of shame.
Pretty soon we discover that this woman is thirsty, but not just for water, something more. Deep down she feels empty, unsatisfied. We learn that she’s been searching for satisfaction in others, in relationships. Over and over again, she’s tried to find what she believes will satisfy her heart and soul, but it’s all turned up empty. Her story is full of broken dreams and shattered hopes, baggage and pain.
To Jesus, this comes as no surprise. He knows her story and He lays it all out. Five husbands and the man she now lives with is not her husband. Nothing is hidden from Jesus. There are no secrets here. And what does she do when she realizes Jesus knows her story? Does she run or hide? Just the opposite. She’s excited. She wants to know more. It’s as if she’s somehow been set free.
But, how can this be? How is it possible that revealing all of her baggage before Jesus could possibly lead to feeling satisfied and filled? One word, Grace. Instead of being judged or condemned, she is loved. And that right there is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, grace covering sin and love replacing shame. Only when we experience the love and grace of Jesus Christ will our hearts and souls be truly satisfied. No longer will we need to run and hide, because all that we’ve done has been covered by all that Jesus did. Finally, the deepest longings of our hearts can be filled.
If shame is the driving force of your life, you will never be satisfied. If you’re struggling with shame and unworthiness because of your story, stop running. Come before Jesus with your story and see what happens when your shame meets His grace. This is the satisfaction and joy our souls long for. This is the good news of the Gospel!
