O Teu Verso Cinco # Your Verse Five

 #

Joshua 1:1-9 is one of the most often quoted, cited, and even commercialized of Old Testament texts; specifically verses six through nine. Here we find the Lord encouraging and emboldening Israel’s new leader using powerful phrases like, “Be strong and courageous,” and that he would “have good success wherever” he went. Joshua was to be a great man in Israel, blessed by God and exalted before the people (Joshua 3:7). But when we consider a man or woman of God’s prestige we should never forget about their verse five!

Here’s what we mean: Joshua’s greatness, like Moses’ before him, was to be a direct result of God’s constant presence.

Moses and Joshua may have each grown to be exceptional individuals in their own right, but it was God’s presence that made them great. It was God’s presence that molded them into becoming great leaders of men. God’s presence precedes greatness. God’s presence precedes effectiveness. And it’s God’s presence that precedes anything of eternal worth at all.

Don’t fall for the trap of seeing men and women as great in and of themselves (or seeing yourself that way). Remember, it is by God’s presence and favor first that we can accomplish the work He has set before us. “Be strong and very courageous” is always preceded by a verse five, action is always made both possible and effective by God’s presence first.

~ Lucas 6:6-7

 #

It was the Sabbath, a day to be kept holy (Exodus 20:8). The people had gathered faithfully, sitting around a pulpit where they would be lead in prayer, in reading, and the teaching of Scripture. Here, Jesus was standing in the midst of such an assembly not simply teaching the Bible but living its truth and shining its light.

That Sabbath day, there was a man with a deformed or withered hand. Jesus would go on to heal the man’s hand, literally healing his body on a day intended for bodily rest and man’s good (Mark 2:27). The Lord had compassion on that man, had mercy on him and lovingly healed him.

This healing was beautiful, right, holy and just, as everything Jesus did in His lifetime was. But in that same Synagogue there was also an ugliness, and that ugliness was displayed by the “believers”, the Scribes and Pharisees.

Ugly religion doesn’t seek to love and heal those around them, ugly religion seeks to accuse others and show how they are wrong and inferior. Follow in the Master’s footsteps today by being merciful and compassionate instead of trying to display your own glory through your ugly religion. Rather, display Jesus’ glory by walking as He walked.

À Tradição Ou Não À Tradição # To Tradition Or Not To Tradition

~ Marcos 7:6-8

 #
Traditions can be good things. They can often remind us of where we came from or help us to focus on Jesus during our church services. Unfortunately, they can also be a great cause trouble and turmoil in the church. Churches have split because one group won’t let go of a tradition, while the other sees no need for it.

Why do churches split over traditions? It happens when we hold a tradition as a commandment from God that cannot be changed. Jesus was responding to the pharisees because they looked at Him as a bad person because He was breaking their traditions. Their traditions seemed good and were meant to honor God. But, they judged people by how well they kept the traditions and not how much they loved God.

As we hold on to our traditions above anything else, we are not honoring God with our hearts. We are in reality honoring him with just our lips. Are there things you are judging others by that are not commandments of God? It might be what people wear to church, the version of Bible that is taught from, or maybe the music a church plays. Remember that traditions can take many different forms in our lives and our churches.

GRANDE IMAGEM, pequenos passos # BIG PICTURE, small steps

~ Mateus 25:22-23

 #

Sometimes we can become overwhelmed by the “BIG PICTURE” of life: big dreams, big opportunities, big decisions, big transitions, and big questions.

One of the biggest questions regarding the big picture that we often ask is: “What is God’s plan for my life?” The key to answering this big question is actually found in taking what may seem like small steps. We only begin to see the big picture become a reality when we’re faithful with the relationships, opportunities, and obvious needs God has already place right in front of us.

Often we pray for God to give us a big opportunity to share the gospel when we have not been intentional with the existing relationships in our lives. We pray for God to show big ways we can serve Him when we have not taken initiative with opportunities that exist within blocks of our own home. We want to meet big needs and make a big difference yet we often don’t realize this will require small, messy, risky steps of faithfulness with no fanfare, much of what may seem very different initially from the big picture we dreamed. We can easily forget that the big picture begins and continues to develop as we take small steps of faithfulness, following Jesus one step at a time.

A Palavra Habitou Entre Nós # The Word Dwelt Among Us

 #

The word “dwelt” literally means God set up His tent or tabernacle among us. In the Old Testament the tabernacle was a large tent that traveled with the Israelites wherever they went. The priest would go into meet with God; they had to be ceremonially clean in every way to enter God’s presence. Jesus turned this upside down, because He takes on flesh and pitches His tent in the middle of our backyard, a messed up backyard at that. Put simply: Jesus entered the mess of our world.

Jesus was born in a dirty stone feeding trough, to a young struggling family, in a small town where sheep outnumbered people, in a defeated country that was under military occupation, among a people who felt politically and spiritually defeated. And as we look at His life and ministry we see Jesus’ path intersecting with the most unlikely people, inserting Himself in the midst of their sin, their mistakes, and their struggles. He pursues even those who will eventually deny Him, betray Him, and crucify Him. If you are a follower of Jesus this should resonate with you BIG-TIME.

We cannot impact the world from a safe distance. Following Jesus will lead us to enter the mess of real lives in the real world. Just as Jesus entered the mess of our lives, we must be willing to enter the mess of others lives around us…

Amor: Praticado Mais Do Que Definido # Love: Displayed More Than Defined

A escritura é clara.

Can you come up with a definition for love (that accurately describes what love is) in two or three sentences?

It’s not an easy task. No matter how we define love, our definition always seems to be lacking. Trying to define love can be like describing chocolate to a tribesman in sub-Saharan Africa who has never heard of nor tasted chocolate before. We may have trouble defining it, explaining it, and even finding it, but we know deep down inside that we need it.

In 1 Corinthians 13, the Apostle Paul wrote one of the most famous descriptions of love. Notice that he does not give a dictionary definition but instead a description of love displayed. The love Paul describes values:

Giving over getting.

Commitment over feelings.

The long haul over the short term.

The scripture is clear. You can see this love displayed in patience, kindness, humility, forgiveness, integrity, and ongoing perseverance. This kind of love survives and stands the tests of time and tribulations.

Sempre Presente # Ever Present

Have you ever really enjoyed being in the presence of someone? It might have been a boyfriend or girlfriend. Maybe someone who always made you laugh, and you probably still look forward to spending time with them. The Psalmist wrote that in God’s presence there is a fullness of joy for us.

In the Old Testament, God dwelt in the Holy of Holies, and it was where His presence was (Leviticus 16:2). Once a year, a priest was chosen to enter there. But, we read that after Jesus died on the cross, its separating veil was ripped (Matthew 27:51). Therefore, God no longer dwells there.

We can often look for that Holy of Holies experience in our places of worship. We may walk into a church service and sense that God is there; which is probably true. We constantly long for that sense wherever Christians meet. But, should this be the only time that we sense God’s presence? Should we really be searching for God’s presence? Or, should we be acknowledging God’s constant presence in our lives? Jesus says that He will always be with us (Matthew 28:20) and He even sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in us (John 14:15-17).

Trust is a fragile thing. Easy to break, easy to lose, and very difficult to have again.

Pedras Vivas # Living Stones

From our modern perspective it’s very easy to think of the church as a building made of steel, wood, bricks, and mortar. When the New Testament speaks of the church, it is always talking about people. In fact, the earliest evidence of a house being converted architecturally into a place of Christian worship is not until approximately 241-256 AD.

In Peter’s description of the church, he describes people as “living stones” who are “built up as a spiritual house” with Jesus as the “cornerstone.” From Peter’s perspective the church is not so much a physical building or even an institution but people that God is developing and bringing together in Jesus. It’s important to remember that what makes us as “living stones” fit together in a cohesive unit is making sure that the cornerstone is in place. In the construction of a building, the cornerstone is set first in the foundation and all the other stones are positioned in reference to this stone. If the cornerstone is weak or not set in the right place, everything else in the building will be off.

How we view the church, influences greatly how we approach ministry. Our goal can quickly become building bigger facilities or growing an institution instead of developing people who love and follow Jesus. It is vitally important that the church you call home is built on the only foundation that can stand, Jesus.

JoJo Rock and Ozzy - Amazing Grace ... ♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind, but now I see

Let me tell you bout a word called Grace,
It’s a tale of love for the human race
By a God who wanted to embrace
So he came to earth to meet us face to face
It don’t matter who you are or what you’ve done or where you’ve been
Because a God of love and amazing grace
Will heal your life and forgive your sin

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind, but now I see

You see the, key to grace is a little known fact
That the, power comes from giving it back
Lend a helping hand to spread the light
It don’t, take too much to be changing a life
It can be, something small like wearing a smile
I started at I seven when I sponsored a child
You too can make a difference, I know its true
Cause to change the world it all starts with you

Breakdown in Swahili
God was with me when I passed through the very bad situation of my life
What can separate me from his love?
In the fire I didn’t burn, in the desert he took care of me.
What an amazing love.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind, but now I see

Who holds the hand of God, never falls.
