Ouvir e concordar com a verdade bíblica tornou-se um passatempo evangélico. Este é um lugar perigoso para se viver. Quando a "verdade" e "estar certo" torna-se um passatempo, um orgulho natural começa, tal e qual uma erva daninha, a brotar, a crescer e a multiplicar-se à volta de cada uma das nossas habilidades. O orgulho, quando nos sentimos bons nalguma coisa, inevitavelmente irá surgir na nossa espiritualidade. Mas este orgulho torna-se mais insidioso por causa do seu contexto: a sua exclusividade. Jesus Cristo é de facto "o Caminho, e a Verdade, e a Vida" (João 14:6), o único caminho para o Pai.
Tragicamente, esta bela verdade pode ser usada perversamente nas nossas mentes! Pode tornar-se tanto sobre a capacidade de ganhar uma discussão como de uma alma ser eternamente salva. Ou sobre o "inchar-nos" pelo cada vez maior conhecimento e superioridade que nos permite sentir. Pode promover uma mentalidade "nós contra eles", onde começamos a olhar para todo o mal "lá fora" e esquecemos dos nossos próprios defeitos. Em suma, ela pode criar em nós uma falsa justiça. Quando nos tornamos meros "ouvintes" do Evangelho, agimos como os Judeus fizeram, que não eram mais do que "ouvintes da lei". Estamos simplesmente a substituir a obra expiatória de Jesus como a nossa justificação diante de um Deus Santo para o nosso conhecimento e concordância com a "verdade". "Amém", não é uma palavra passe para o céu, mas sejamos "cumpridores da palavra e não somente ouvintes, enganando-vos a vós mesmos [nós]" (Tiago 1:22).
Lembrem-se da instrução de Jesus:
Vós Me chamais Mestre e Senhor; e dizeis bem, porque Eu o Sou. Ora, se Eu, o Senhor e Mestre, vos lavei os pés, também vós deveis lavar os pés uns aos outros. Porque Eu vos dei exemplo, para que, como Eu vos fiz, façais vós também. Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: Não é o servo maior do que o seu senhor, nem o enviado maior do que aquele que o enviou. Se sabeis estas coisas, bem-aventurados sois se as praticardes. (João 13:13-17)

Hearing and agreeing with Biblical truth has become an evangelical hobby. This is a dangerous place to live. When "truth" and "being right" become a hobby a natural pride will begin, much like a weed, to sprout, grow, and multiply around each and everyone of our skills. The pride, when one feels in being good at something will inevitably crop up in our spirituality. But this pride becomes more insidious because of its context: its exclusivity. Jesus Christ is indeed "the Way, and the Truth, and the Life" (John 14:6), the only path to the Father.
Tragically, this beautiful truth can be used perversely in our minds! It can become as much about the ability to win an argument as about an eternal soul being saved. Or about the "puffing up" of ever increasing knowledge, and the superiority that allows one to feel. It can foster an "us versus them" mentality, where we begin to look at all the evil "out there" and forget about our own shortcomings. In short, it can create in us a false righteousness. When we become mere "hearers" of the Gospel, we act as those Jews did, who were nothing but "hearers of the law". We simply are substituting the atoning work of Jesus as our justification before a Holy God for our knowledge of and agreement with the "truth". "Amen", isn’t the password into heaven, but let us "be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving [ourselves]" (James 1:22).
Remember Jesus’ instruction,
You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. (John 13:13-17)
