Gratidão Pelo Presente (Dom) # Gratitude For The Gift

"Ele teve um slinky (brinquedo em forma de uma mola comprida), e tudo o que eu tive foi esta bolsa estúpida," disse a minha sobrinha chateada depois de abrir o seu muito antecipado presente de Natal.

O primo dela, momentos antes, tinha aberto o seu presente e encontrou uma brilhante e prateada mola comprida. Ela estava à espera de encontrar o mesmo.

A decepção de não receber um slinky, mas em vez disso, uma bolsa cor-de-rosa delicada era muito mais do que podia suportar e em pouco tempo ela estava a deixar escapar os seus verdadeiros sentimentos.

Nós, adultos, sentando-nos à voltar da árvore belamente ornamentada, ficámos completamente mortificados com as suas palavras. Como é que ela poderia ser tão rude, sem sentimentos, e francamente ingrata?

Mas os pensamentos que ela deixou escapar são o que muitos de nós sentimos bem lá no fundo, quando olhamos para os presentes (dons) que temos em comparação com os presentes (dons) dos outros.

Quantas vezes quisemos que os nossos filhos fossem tão inteligentes e populares como os outros? Ou que o nosso cônjuge apoiasse mais? Quantas vezes olhámos para as casas apalaçadas dos outros e começámos a ressentir as nossas?

Muitas vezes a nossa preocupação com os presentes (dons) dos outros, promove uma insatisfação com os presentes (dons) que nos foram dados.

Hoje, em vez de desejarmos o que os outros têm, que possamos encontrar o valor e apreço por aquilo que temos.

ORAÇÃO:

Senhor,
Obrigado por todos e cada presente (dom) que me deste. Que eu possa tomar o tempo hoje para ser grato!

"He got a slinky, and all I got was this stupid purse," my niece angrily snapped after opening her much anticipated Christmas gift.

Her cousin, just moments before, had opened his present to find a shiny, silver, slinky. She was hoping to find the same.

The disappointment of not receiving a slinky, but instead, a dainty pink purse was much more than she could bear and before long she was blurting out her true feelings.

We, the adults, sitting around the beautifully ornamented tree, were completely mortified at her words. How could she be so rude, thoughtless, and downright ungrateful?

But the thoughts she blurted out are what so many of us feel deep down inside as we look at the gifts we have in comparison with others’ gifts.

How many times have we wished our kids were as smart and popular as others? Or that our spouse was more supportive? How many times have we looked at others’ palatial homes and started to resent our own?

Oftentimes our preoccupation with others’ gifts, fosters a dissatisfaction with the gifts we’ve been given.

Today, instead of longing for what others have, may we find value in and appreciation for what we have.

PRAYER:

Lord,
Thank You for each and every gift you have given to me. May I take the time today to be grateful!

As Duas Visões Da Dor # The Two Views Of Pain

Todos provavelmente já vimos a ilusão acima da Mulher Idosa – Mulher Jovem. Dependendo no que focamos, vemos duas coisas diferentes. Ó focamos na Mulher Idosa e a vemos, ou focamos na Mulher Jovem e a vemos. Isto também pode ser verdade nas nossas vidas quando olhamos para o mal e a dor à nossa volta.

Os discípulos decidiram concentrar-se na dor e pecado em vez de verem a imagem de Deus a trabalhar através disso. Podemos fazer a mesma coisa. Porque é que Deus permitiu que isto acontecesse na minha vida? Porque é que existe o mal no mundo? Será que um Deus amoroso permitiria que tantas crianças morressem de fome? Todos temos tido um pensamento algo semelhante a estas perguntas. Na sabedoria de Deus, Ele decidiu não divulgar muito de onde vem o mal, nem a sua origem (Deuteronómio 29:29).

Este mistério pode consumir as pessoas no âmago do seu ser e eles nunca perdoam Deus, por um evento que sentem que Ele é o culpado (eles concentram-se num lado da imagem e esquecem-se de ver a linda Mulher Jovem). Mas, sabemos que todas as coisas cooperam para o bem daqueles que amam a Deus (Romanos 8:28). Em vez de focar na "doença", devemos concentrar-nos na cura que é Jesus. Jesus disse aos Seus discípulos que eles estavam a procurar a coisa errada. Parem de procurar algo para culpar e comecem a olhar para Deus para louvar. Eles foram cegados pelo problema da dor, em vez de ver a glória de Deus a ser exibida. Eles poderiam ter facilmente perdido os milagres de Deus.

Pense nisso por um minuto. Tem estado a concentrar-se tanto no problema da dor na sua vida ou de pessoas à sua volta que tem perdido a glória de Deus que está a ser exibida? Perceber que Deus pode trazer o bem nos nossos momentos difíceis é também o que nos permite, como Cristãos passar por esses momentos. José é o exemplo perfeito disto quando é vendido pelos seus irmãos, torna-se escravo, é colocado na prisão, e, eventualmente, quando se torna no braço direito do rei (Génesis 50:20). Jesus tomou o maior pecado de todos, a morte de um homem inocente, e transformou-o na maior obra da glória de Deus a ser exibida.

We have all probably seen the illusion above of the Old Woman – Young Girl. Depending on what you focus on, you see two different things. You either focus on the Old Woman and see her, or you focus on seeing the Young Girl and you see her. This can also be true in our lives as we look at the evil and hurting around us.

The disciples decided to focus on the hurt and sin instead of seeing the picture of God working through it. We can do the same thing. Why did God allow this to happen in my life? Why is there evil in the world? Would a loving God allow so many starving children to die? We have all thought something similar to one of these questions. In God’s wisdom, He has decided to not divulge too much of where evil comes from or it’s origin (Deuteronomy 29:29).

This mystery can consume people to the core of their being and they never forgive God for an event they feel He is to blame for (they focus on the one part of the picture and forget to see it for the beautiful young girl). But, we do know that all things work together for the good of those that love God (Romans 8:28). Instead of focusing on the "disease", we should be focusing on the cure that is Jesus. Jesus told His disciples that they were looking for the wrong thing. Stop looking for something to blame and start looking for God to praise. They were blinded by the problem of pain, instead of seeing God’s glory displayed. They could have easily missed out on the works of God.

Think about that for a minute. Have you been focusing so much on the problem of pain in your life or of those around you and missed the glory of God being displayed? Realizing that God can bring good out of our hard times is also what allows us as a Christian to make it through those times. Joseph is the perfect example of this as he is sold by his brothers, becomes a slave, is put in jail, and eventually the right hand man of the king (Genesis 50:20). Jesus took the greatest sin of all, death of an innocent man, and turned it into the greatest work of God’s glory to be displayed.

Um Presente Apreciado # A Gift Enjoyed

Condenar é declarar uma pessoa ou coisa condenada e impróprio para uso posterior ou liberdade. Condenação não é apenas uma grande palavra na Bíblia, é uma palavra que carrega um grande peso com ela quando vista à luz da eternidade. É como uma enorme pedra a cair sobre uma casa; esmaga, devasta e fim. Isto é o quê e quem somos fora de Jesus, condenados. Nós condenamo-nos pela a nossa rebelião contra Deus, o pecado. Aqui está a simples realidade do universo:

Deus é imensamente valioso, totalmente bom e infinitamente digno de toda a glória, honra e adoração. Mas nós, como Sua criação reconhecemos os nossos próprios desejos antes Dele, colocando-nos no Seu lugar, como mais valiosos, bons e dignos do nosso tempo e atenção. Isto chama-se idolatria.

Esta idolatria então infecta todos os dias que vivemos, e cada relacionamento que buscamos. O que experimentamos por meio de Cristo, no entanto, é o maior cumprimento do coração humano; um resgate de nós mesmos! Sermos deixados a nós mesmos é a morte, literalmente condenação. Mas para aqueles em Cristo Jesus temos vida, e "vida em abundância" (João 10:10). Nenhuma condenação significa, então, que somos declarados justos e limpos por causa do sacrifício satisfatório de Cristo. Aprecie o dom de Deus dado a si na pessoa e obra de Jesus Cristo!

To condemn is to declare a person or thing doomed and unfit for further use or freedom. Condemnation isn’t just a big word in the Bible, it’s a word that carries a great weight to it when viewed in light of eternity. It’s like a huge stone falling upon a house; crushing, devastating, and final. That is what and who we are outside of Jesus, condemned. We sentence ourselves by our rebellion against God, sin. Here is the simple reality of the universe:

God is immeasurably valuable, wholly good, and infinitely worthy of all glory, honor, and worship. But we as His creation acknowledge our own wants before Him, setting ourselves up in His place, as more valuable, good, and worthy of our time and attention. This is called idolatry.

This idolatry then infects every day we live, and every relationship we pursue. What we experience through Christ however, is the greatest fulfillment of the human heart; a rescue from ourselves! To be left to ourselves is death, literally condemnation. But for those in Christ Jesus we get life, and "life abundantly" (John 10:10). No condemnation means then, that we are declared righteous and clean because of Christ’s wrath satisfying sacrifice. Enjoy the gift of God given to you in the person and work of Jesus Christ!

Melissa Brandts and her husband spent a pleasant holiday in Banff National Park, Canada, when they were surprised by a curious squirrel. They triggered the camera's timer to take a picture of the couple and the animal appeared just in front of the equipment. According to Melissa, the animal was attracted by the sound of the camera's focus, which was automatically adjusting. The squirrel obviously stood in the front!

À Tradição Ou Não À Tradição # To Tradition Or Not To Tradition

As tradições podem ser coisas boas. Podem muitas vezes lembrar-nos de onde viemos ou ajudar-nos a concentrar-nos em Jesus durante os nossos serviços de culto. Infelizmente, também podem ser uma grande causa de problemas e tumulto na igreja. Igrejas têm se separado porque um grupo não larga a tradição, enquanto o outro não vê necessidade para ela.

Porque é que as igrejas se dividem por causa de tradições? Isto acontece quando temos uma tradição como um mandamento de Deus que não pode ser alterado. Jesus respondia aos fariseus quando estes olhavam para Ele como uma pessoa má, porque Ele transgredia as suas tradições. As suas tradições pareciam bem e foram feitas para honrar a Deus. Mas, eles julgaram as pessoas por quão bem eles mantinham as tradições e não o quanto eles amavam a Deus.

Enquanto nos apegamos às nossas tradições acima de tudo, não estamos a honrar a Deus com os nossos corações. Estamos na verdade a honrá-Lo apenas com os nossos lábios. Haverá coisas pelas quais está a julgar os outros que não são mandamentos de Deus? Pode ser o que as pessoas vestem para ir à igreja, a versão da Bíblia que é utilizada para ensinar, ou talvez a música que uma igreja usa. Lembre-se que as tradições podem assumir muitas formas diferentes nas nossas vidas e nas nossas igrejas.

Traditions can be good things. They can often remind us of where we came from or help us to focus on Jesus during our church services. Unfortunately, they can also be a great cause trouble and turmoil in the church. Churches have split because one group won’t let go of a tradition, while the other sees no need for it.

Why do churches split over traditions? It happens when we hold a tradition as a commandment from God that cannot be changed. Jesus was responding to the pharisees when they looked at Him as a bad person because He was breaking their traditions. Their traditions seemed good and were meant to honor God. But, they judged people by how well they kept the traditions and not how much they loved God.

As we hold on to our traditions above anything else, we are not honoring God with our hearts. We are in reality honoring Him with just our lips. Are there things you are judging others by that are not commandments of God? It might be what people wear to church, the version of Bible that is taught from, or maybe the music a church plays. Remember that traditions can take many different forms in our lives and our churches.

Graça: Hoje e Amanhã # Grace: Tomorrow and Today

Muitas vezes ficamos concentrados na graça futura que vamos desfrutar com a volta de Jesus. No final de muitos serviços da igreja ouvimos falar da nossa necessidade de colocar a nossa fé em Jesus, para que possamos um dia chegar ao céu, onde vamos receber essa graça. Sim, isto está correcto. Mas, se olharmos atentamente para o texto de hoje, podemos ver claramente que havia muito mais mal do que bem nas nossas vidas antes de virmos para a fé em Cristo.

E vos vivificou, estando vós mortos em ofensas e pecados, em que noutro tempo andastes segundo o curso deste mundo, segundo o príncipe das potestades do ar, do espírito que agora opera nos filhos da desobediência; Entre os quais todos nós também antes andávamos nos desejos da nossa carne, fazendo a vontade da carne e dos pensamentos; e éramos por natureza filhos da ira, como os outros também. (Efésios 2:1-3)

Seguimos Satanás (uma verdade não muito popular), vivemos nas paixões da nossa carne, e comportámos como desejámos. Mas, por causa do amor de Deus por nós não somos mais escravos de nós mesmos, do pecado, ou Satanás! Não estamos mais "mortos nas nossas transgressões", somos vivificados Nele. É só pela graça de Deus que podemos seguir e obedecer os Seus mandamentos. Não mais sendo levados aqui e ali pelos caminhos do mundo, a graça de Deus fez um caminho para nós enquanto vivemos aqui na terra. Agora os nossos desejos mais profundos são fazer a vontade de Deus e viver adorando-O em vez de nós mesmos.

We often focus on the future grace we will enjoy with the return of Jesus. At the end of many church services we hear of our need to put our faith in Jesus so that we can some day get to heaven where we will receive that grace. Yes, this is correct. But, if we look closely at today’s text, we can clearly see that there was a lot more wrong than right in our lives before we came to faith in Christ.

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience, among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. (Ephesians 2:1-3 ESV)

We followed Satan (a none too popular truth), lived in the passions of our flesh, and behaved as we desired. But, because of God’s love for us we are no longer slaves to self, sin, or Satan! No longer are we "dead in our trespasses", we are made alive in Him. It is only by God’s grace that we can follow and obey His commandments. No more being carried here and there by the ways of the world, God’s grace has made a way for us while we live here on the earth. Now our deepest desires are to do God’s will and live worshipping Him instead of ourselves.

A Bênção De Dar Graças # The Blessing Of Giving Thanks

Para pintar um quadro mais claro para este verso, devemos perceber que Jesus, nas Suas viagens, deparou-Se com dez homens que tinham lepra. Lucas 17:12-13 diz-nos que embora os doentes "mantinham-se distantes" (como qualquer um que tivesse esta doença faria naquele tempo), isto não os impediu todos de Lhe gritar: "tem misericórdia de nós", devido à sua doença. É claro, porque Jesus estava envolvido, este facto seria um "compromisso divino" que Cristo devia manter, mas este facto era certamente desconhecido para estes homens.

Estes versos também permitem-nos ver o verdadeiro coração destes dez que foram abençoados por Deus. Agora é claro através destes versos que dez homens pediram "a misericórdia de Deus" para trazer uma cura (V-13), e que dez homens foram realmente curados (V-14), e é igualmente claro que apenas um percebeu a magnitude do que tinha sido feito... e quem era O que tinha o poder de o fazer.

Quantas vezes pedimos ao Senhor uma bênção, uma cura, a Sua misericórdia quando nos encontramos no meio de algo que pensamos não podemos superar; e pela Sua graça e a Sua misericórdia, Ele ajuda-nos a passar esse momento. Mesmo nos desafios que foram um resultado directo da nossa própria desobediência. E, naqueles momentos em que fomos abençoados por Ele, mudou isso os nossos corações, atitudes, motivações e direcção para o "Verdadeiro Arrependimento", ou demos um obrigatório "obrigado Senhor" com a boca, mas as nossas acções provaram que não estávamos verdadeiramente gratos.

Assim como Jesus sabia dos muitos que Ele iria curar, e sabia que apenas um voltaria para agradecer e louvá-Lo (V:17-19), Ele também conhece o conteúdo dos nossos agradecimentos, e se somos verdadeiramente agradecidos, ou se simplesmente dizemos algo com as nossas bocas, com os nossos corações longe Dele.

Amado, para nós que dizemos que O conhecemos e O amamos... Ele espera melhor do que um mero serviço de lábios... Ele espera dos Seus filhos Serviço do Coração!

To paint a clearer picture for this verse, we must understand that Jesus, in His travels, came across ten men that had leprosy. Luke 17:12-13 tells us that although the afflicted "stood afar off" (as any with this disease would have during this time), it did not stop them all from shouting out to Him to "have mercy on us", with regard to their ailment. Of course, because Jesus was involved, this would have been indeed a "divine appointment" that Christ was to keep, but this fact was surely unknown to these men.

These verses also allow us a chance to see the true heart of these ten that have been blessed by God. Now it is clear through these verses that ten men asked for "God’s mercy" to bring about a healing (V-13), and that ten men were indeed healed (V-14), and it is equally clear that only one realized the magnitude of what had been done... and who it was that had the power to bring it to pass.

How many times have we solicited the Lord for a blessing, for a healing, for His mercy when in the midst of something that we thought could not be overcome; and by His grace and His mercy, He saw us through. Even in challenges which were a direct result of our own disobedience. And, in those times of His blessings, did it change our hearts, attitudes, motives and direction toward "True Repentance", or did we give an obligatory "thank you Lord" with our mouths, but our actions proved that we were not truly thankful.

Just as Jesus knew of the many He healed, and knew that only one returned to thank and praise Him (V:17-19), He knows also the content of our thanks, and whether we are truly thankful, or if it simply something we say with our mouths, with our hearts being far from Him.

Beloved, for we who say we know Him and love Him... He expects better than mere lip service... He expects from His children Heart Service!

Zacarias: Um Exemplo de Fé # Zechariah: A Faith Example

Zacarias não é um nome que é mencionado muitas vezes quando se falam dos homens fiéis da Bíblia. Ele só é mencionado no Evangelho de Lucas, porque é o pai do grande João Baptista, o percursor do Messias, Jesus. Apesar de não haver livros escritos sobre ele ou qualquer outro menção na Bíblia, ele é alguém para quem se pode olhar como um exemplo de fidelidade.

Zacarias e a sua esposa Isabel eram velhos em idade e não tinham filhos (Lucas 1:7). Naquele dia, não ter filhos normalmente trazia tristeza para a família e vergonha daqueles à sua volta (Lucas 1:25). Os de fora costumavam pensar que havia pecado na vida do casal, e que não ter filhos era o meio pelo qual Deus os punia. Porém, durante tudo isto, Zacarias optou por permanecer fiel a Deus no seu trabalho como sacerdote e nas suas orações para ter uma criança sua.

Zacarias poderia facilmente ter parado de orar, tornar-se amargo e parar de trabalhar para o Deus que não lhe estava a dar um filho. No entanto, isto não é como termina a história de Zacarias. Sabemos que Deus de facto respondeu às suas orações e provou-Se fiel, abençoando-o com um filho, João Baptista. Podemos ser encorajados de que Deus ouve as nossas orações e responde no Seu tempo para dar uma maior bênção do que poderíamos ter imaginado.

Zechariah is not a name that is mentioned often when faithful men of the Bible are spoken of. He is only mentioned in the Gospel of Luke because he is the father of the great John the Baptist, the fore runner of the Messiah, Jesus. While there aren’t books written about him or any other mentions in the Bible, he is someone we can look to as an example of faithfulness.

Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth were old in age and did not have children (Luke 1:7). In that day, being childless usually brought sorrow to the family and shame from those around them (Luke 1:25). Outsiders would often think that there was sin in the lives of the couple, and that childlessness is the means by which God is punishing them. During all of this though, Zechariah chose to remain faithful to God in his work as a priest and in his prayers for a child of his own.

Zechariah could have easily stopped praying, became bitter, and stopped working for the God who was not providing a child for him. However, this is not how Zechariah’s story ends. We know that God did in fact answer his prayers and proved Himself faithful by blessing him with a son, John the Baptist. We can be encouraged that God hears our prayers and answers them in His timing for a greater blessing than we could have ever imagined.

És Extraordinário # You Are Extraordinary

Sente-se vulgar? Enquanto passa o seu dia, a correr para o supermercado, levando as crianças ao treino de futebol, empilhando a roupa suja e todas as outras coisas divertidas, parece toda esta actividade importante? Ou sente-se perdido na confusão?

Eu encontrava-me a conduzir para a igreja numa manhã depois de um grande nevão e olhei para um campo. O sol estava a bater na neve fazendo-o brilhar como diamantes. As árvores tinham neve sobre elas apenas o suficiente para tirar o fôlego. E o céu estava a clarear mostrando uma bonita, cor azul. Como poderia eu comparar-me a isto? A natureza é tão linda, tão impressionante e aqui estou eu a conduzir às voltas de uma forma tão vulgar quanto isto pode ser.

Efésios 2:10 diz que somos a obra de Deus, e Efésios 5:1 chama-nos filhos amados. O Criador do Universo vê-me como algo especial e algo a ser valorizado. Certamente não vulgar, não chato, não para Ele. Ele também não vê a minha vida assim. Deus deu-me uma família para cuidar, um trabalho onde usar as minhas habilidades, pessoas com quem posso me relacionar e muito mais. Ele quer que eu brilhe em minha vida assim como a neve brilha ao sol.

Não é só que Deus me ama porque sou a Sua criação. Há também uma grande luz que brilha através de mim, que é a luz de Jesus. Depois de aceitar Jesus Cristo no meu coração, eu sou uma nova criação (2 Coríntios 5:17). Nós não somos vulgares, somos extraordinários. Não existimos apenas para ocupar espaço e gastar gasolina, mas foi-nos dado habilidades, e paixões, e pessoas com quem interagir numa base diária. Não há ninguém como nós. Não há mais ninguém que possa fazer o que Deus nos pediu para fazer.

Às vezes ficamos perdidos na confusão da vida diária. Podemos ver-nos assim com pouco valor. Mas Deus vê muito mais. Deus vê-nos como especiais. Ele tem coisas especiais para fazermos hoje e todos os dias.

Do you feel ordinary? As you go about your day, running to the grocery store, driving kids to soccer practice, piling laundry and all those other fun things, does all that activity seem important? Or do you feel lost in the shuffle?

I was driving to church one morning after a big snow and looked across a field. The sun was hitting the snow making it glisten like diamonds. The trees had just enough snow on them to be breathtaking. And the sky was clearing to show a beautiful, blue color. How could I compare to that? Nature is so beautiful, so breathtaking, and here I am driving around as ordinary as can be.

Ephesians 2:10 says that we are God’s handiwork, and Ephesians 5:1 calls us dearly loved children. The Maker of the Universe sees me as something special and something to be cherished. Certainly not ordinary, not boring, not to Him. Nor does He see my life like that. God has given me a family to care for, a job to use my skills, people to connect with, and so much more. He wants me to shine in my life just like the snow shines in the sun.

It’s not just that God loves me because I am His creation. There is also a great light shining through me which is the light of Jesus. After accepting Jesus Christ into my heart, I am a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). We are not ordinary, we’re extraordinary. We don’t just exist to take up space and use up gas, but we have been given skills, and passions, and people with whom to interact with on a daily basis. There is no one else like us. There is no one else who can do what God has asked us to do.

Sometimes we get lost in the daily shuffle of life. We just might see ourselves as not so much. But God sees so much more. God sees us as special. He has special things for us to do today and every day.
