O que é a beleza? Bem, depende a quem perguntas. Culturas e indivíduos têm definições muito diferentes, mas uma coisa permanece na mesma: a beleza é altamente valorizada. Basta olhar para qualquer revista, publicidade ou a mais recente estrela de Hollywood, a beleza é sempre uma indústria multi-bilionária.
Não há nada de mal em querer ser bonito. Afinal, a beleza é um dom de Deus. E nenhuma criação é mais bonita que uma mulher bonita. No entanto, há um perigo em esforçar-se excessivamente por ser bela a ponto de negligenciar o relacionamento com Deus. A Bíblia diz que a beleza deveria ser mais do que apenas um foco externo.
Porquê? Porque a beleza externa desaparece. É temporária. Assim como a capacidade atlética de um grande atleta se desvanece, o mesmo acontece com a beleza de uma mulher. A Bíblia não está a dizer que uma mulher não deveria se importar com a sua aparência ou fazer algo para realçar a sua beleza. A Bíblia está a dizer para verificarmos as prioridades, concentrando-nos no que permanece. Caso contrário, existe a tentação de tornar-nos egocêntricos e narcisistas, excessivamente materialistas ou até mesmo sedutores na abordagem da beleza, o que pode levar a percepções pouco saudáveis de nós mesmo e dos outros.
Em vez disso, Deus diz para concentrar-nos no coração, na beleza interior que vem como um subproduto da verdadeira devoção a Jesus Cristo. E à medida que a devoção a Cristo cresce, como uma pessoa caminha com Cristo através dos altos e baixos da vida, esta beleza interior crescerá, não importa como a sociedade se fixa apenas na beleza exterior. É por isso que vemos mulheres mais velhas que literalmente crescem mais bonitas com a idade. O seu espírito, o seu semblante, a sua virtude, é uma maravilha de se ver.
Então, senhoras, o que vão escolher? Vão concentrar-se mais numa beleza que se desvanece e muda com a cultura, ou uma beleza que permanece para sempre e cresce com o tempo?

What is beauty? Well, it depends on who you ask. Cultures and individuals have very different definitions, but one thing remains the same: beauty is highly valued. Just glance at any magazine, advertisement or the latest Hollywood hit, beauty is always a multi-billion dollar industry.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be beautiful. After all, beauty is a gift from God. And no creation is more beautiful than a beautiful woman. However, there is a danger in excessively striving for beauty to the point of neglecting one’s relationship with God. The Bible says that beauty should be more than just an external focus.
Why? Because external beauty fades. It’s temporary. Just as a great athlete’s athletic ability will fade, so it is with beauty in a woman. The Bible is not saying that a woman shouldn’t care about her appearance or do anything to enhance her beauty. The Bible is saying to check your priorities by focusing on what lasts. Otherwise, there’s the temptation to become self-absorbed and narcissistic, excessively materialistic, or even seductive in one’s approach to beauty, all of which can lead to very unhealthy perceptions of self and others.
Instead, God says to focus on the heart, on one’s inner beauty that comes as a byproduct of true devotion to Jesus Christ. And as that devotion to Christ grows, as a person walks with Christ through the ups and downs of life, that inner beauty will grow, no matter how society fixates on external beauty alone. That’s why we see older women who literally grow more beautiful with age. Their spirit, their countenance, their virtue, is a wonder to behold.
So ladies, what will you choose? Will you focus more on a beauty that fades and changes with culture, or a beauty that lasts forever and grows greater over time?
