Ousa Ter Esperança # Dare To Hope

Recentemente, numa viagem de avião, uma mulher foi contar uma história sobre a sua vida a um passageiro. Os outros passageiros perto dela não puderam deixar de ouvir, e enquanto ouviam ficaram cada vez mais tristes com cada detalhe. Isto é, até ela pronunciar três pequenas palavras: "mas, tenho esperança."

Como Cristãos, a esperança devia sair dos nossos poros. A nossa esperança não é encontrada em coisas temporárias, mas no Pai imutável. John Newton, o compositor da letra de "Amazing Grace" (Graça Excelsa), escreveu na sua quarta estrofe: "O Senhor prometeu o bem para mim. A Sua palavra minha esperança assegura. Ele será o meu escudo e a minha porção, enquanto a vida dura."

Todos já ouvimos o ditado, "A vida está cheia de decepções" e isto é muito verdadeiro no nosso mundo. No entanto, a nossa esperança é feita não para ser colocada em seres humanos imperfeitos, mas naquilo que não pode ser abalado: o carácter de um Deus amoroso (Romanos 8:15-16). Sabes, tenho visto o nosso Pai em acção, e Ele dá-nos toda a razão para termos esperança. Afinal, Ele é o Deus da esperança.

Recently, on a plane trip, a woman was telling a story about her life to a fellow passenger. The other passengers near her couldn’t help but overhear, and as they listened they became more and more saddened with each detail. That is, until she uttered three small words, "but, I hope."

As Christians, hope should pour out of our pores. Our hope is not found in temporary things, but in an unchanging Father. John Newton, the lyricist of "Amazing Grace", wrote in it’s fourth stanza: "The Lord has promised good to me. His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be, as long as life endures."

We have all heard the saying, "Life is filled with disappointments" and that’s very true of our world. However, our hope is meant to be placed not in imperfect human beings, but on that which cannot be shaken: the character of a loving God (Romans 8:15-16). You see, I’ve seen our Dad in action, and He gives us every reason to hope. After all, He is the God of hope.

Que Vontade Será Feita # Whose Will Shall Be Done?

Quantas vezes somos confrontados com algo nas nossas vidas que nos perturba, nos angustia, ou simplesmente que não queremos fazer? Enfrento esta situação quase diariamente. Seja não querer lidar com alguém no trabalho, enfrentar o trânsito da hora de ponta ou fazer uma tarefa necessária em casa. A maior parte do tempo penso que seria bom se não tivesse que lidar com estas coisas. Elas tendem a interferir com os meus planos ou a minha vontade e trazem frustração.

Quando reflicto sobre o verso de hoje, fico imediatamente envergonhado ao perceber quão mesquinhas são as minhas chamadas provas e atribulações da vida.

Aqui encontramos Jesus a pedir a Deus Pai para tirar a imensa dor física e morte, que Ele irá sofrer. No entanto, é o que Jesus diz de seguida que nos transmite a lição mais importante. Ele diz: "Todavia, não seja como Eu quero, mas como Tu queres." Por outras palavras, "Deus por favor, não me deixes sofrer uma morte horrível e encontra uma outra maneira para Eu poder salvar toda a humanidade, MAS só se é isso que Tu queres. Se não, estou disposto a realizar a Tua vontade."

Estas 10 palavras de Mateus 26:39 mudou toda o meu paradigma do que significava ser Cristão. Tenho lutado, continuo a lutar e provavelmente irei sempre lutar com o tentar fazer valer a MINHA vontade sobre a VONTADE de Deus. No entanto, quero que Ele retire todos os problemas e dores da vida. Está inerente na nossa natureza caída como seres humanos pensar desta forma. Contudo, meditando neste versículo ajuda-me a compreender verdadeiramente de que Deus tem um plano para mim (nós) e no final, é sobre a Sua VONTADE que devemos estar a orar venha ela acontecer.

How often are we faced with something in our lives that troubles us, grieves us, or simply we don’t want to do? I face this situation almost daily. Whether it’s not wanting to deal with someone at work, face rush hour traffic or do a necessary chore around the house. Most the time I think to myself that it would be nice if I did not have to deal with such things. They tend to be interfering with my plans or my will and bring about frustration.

When I reflect on today's verse, I am immediately shamed into realizing how petty my so called trials and tribulations of life are.

Here we find Jesus asking God the Father to take away the immense physical pain and death He will be suffering. However, it is what Jesus says next that provides the most important lesson. He says, "Yet not as I will, but You will." In other words, "God please don’t let Me suffer a horrible death and find another way for Me to save all of mankind, BUT only if that is what You want. If not, I want to carry out Your will."

These 8 words from Matthew 26:39 shifted my entire paradigm of what it meant to be a Christian. I have struggled, continue to struggle and will probably always struggle with trying to assert MY will over God’s WILL. Yet, I want Him to remove all life’s trouble and pain. It is inherent in our fallen nature as human beings to think this way. However, meditating on this verse helps me truly understand that God has a plan for me (us) and in end it is His WILL that we should be praying comes to pass.

Um Rei com Um Reino # A King With A Kingdom

Toda a glória do céu e da terra, ambos os reinos estão inteiramente dedicados a Jesus, o cabeça da Igreja. Uma dádiva dada pelo Pai ao Filho, domínio tanto no mundo superior como inferior. Mas também, uma tal "cabeça" é certamente uma dádiva para o corpo!

Nenhuma coisa está fora do alcance do Seu poder ou conhecimento e Ele tem-nos sido dado. A Igreja, o corpo de Cristo, é aqui descrito como "a plenitude daquele que cumpre tudo em todos." Não importa a que altura o homem possa ascender, há apenas uma cabeça e que é Cristo.

All the glory of heaven and earth, both realms are entirely devoted to Jesus, the head of the Church. A gift given by the Father to the Son, dominion in both the upper and lower world. But also, such a "head" is most certainly a gift to the body!

Not a thing stands beyond the reach of His power or knowledge, and He has been given to us. The Church, the body of Christ, is here described as the "fullness of Him who fills all in all." He is our fullness, supplying strength where we are weak, even so much as making us stronger in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:10).

He is a King with a kingdom, as we find our completion in Him, so the Father has graciously used us to complete Christ’s headship. We are ransomed to this His domain of light to His honor and glory (Colossians 1:13) as He rules and reigns. Understand today that we serve the literal King of kings! No matter the height to which man may ascend, there is only one head, and that is Christ.

A Grande Participação # The Great Participation

Tem a prática da tua fé sido seca, repetitiva e possivelmente ritualística? Tens te encontrado a dizer frases como: "Preciso ir à igreja", "Preciso fazer o meu devocional" ou "Tenho que abrir as Escrituras hoje?" Grande ênfase no "Eu" pode levar-nos por um caminho que pinta a vida Cristã como sendo algo que precisamos para iniciar e activar por conta própria. "Temos de ser autónomos na nossa caminhada com Cristo" é o que estas declarações estão a sugerir. Ao pensar desta forma é fácil tornares-te frustrado, espiritualmente morto e isolado. Em vez disso, uma melhor maneira de ver a nossa vida espiritual é que ela precisa de ser activada.

Podemos aprender muito com a participação misteriosa da Trindade. Com participação, quero dizer que os membros da Trindade agem como um uns com os outros, e embora sejam três indivíduos diferentes são um só pensamento e um só ser (que nunca seremos capazes de compreender). A doutrina trinitária é um núcleo e uma parte essencial da nossa fé, que muitas vezes passa despercebida especialmente em como é que devemos viver as nossas vidas em Cristo. Como a Trindade interage e participa entre si nos seus muitos trabalhos em nome da humanidade também participa e interage com a humanidade directamente. Como?

- Na pessoa de Jesus Cristo encontramos a constituição de ambos Deus e humano. Jesus é o membro da Trindade que nos introduz a participação com a Divindade, como resultado desta constituição e o Seu sacrifício na cruz. É através de Cristo que começamos a participar com Deus no discipulado, comunidade e missão (João 14:6).

- Discipulado torna-se uma expressão da nossa fé ao participarmos com Cristo em auto-sacrifício, ao sermos crucificados aos nossos próprios desejos e planos de vida não vivendo para nós mesmos, mas para Cristo com quem agora somos um (Gálatas 2:20).

- A nossa união com outros crentes na comunidade da igreja é forjada como resultado da participação em união com Cristo (Romanos 12:4-5).

- Ao participar com Cristo temos uma missão que vai além dos nossos próprios esforços e planos. De facto participamos com Cristo em evangelismo, no ensino, na pregação e outras formas de ministério em oposição a iniciar um ministério com os nossos próprios esforços e energia (João 20:21).

Assim, quando a prática da tua fé parece espiritualmente seca e propensa ao ritual legalista, pede a Deus como é que Ele quer que participes com ele hoje. É ao participarmos com o nosso Deus trino que encontramos plenitude nas nossas vidas espirituais e no nosso dia-a-dia.

Has the practice of your faith seemed dry, repetitive and possibly ritualistic? Do you find yourself saying statements like "I need to go to church", "I need to do my devotional" or "I have to go through Scripture today?" Over-emphasis on the "I" can lead us down a path that paints the Christian life as being something that we need to initiate and activate on our own. "We need to be self-starters in our walk with Christ" are what these statements are suggesting. In thinking this way it is easy to become frustrated, spiritually defunct, and isolated. Instead, a better way to view our spiritual life is that it needs to be activated.

We can learn much from the mysterious participation of the Trinity. In participation, I mean that the members of the Trinity act as one with each other even though they are three different individuals they are one mind and one being (which we will never be able to grasp). Trinitarian doctrine is a core and essential part of our faith that often goes over looked especially in how it is we should go about living our lives in Christ. As the Trinity interacts and participates within itself in its many workings on behalf of humankind so does it also participate and interact with humankind directly. How so?

- In the person of Jesus Christ we find a constitution of both God and human. Jesus is the member of the Trinity that introduces us to participation with the Godhead as a result of this constitution and His sacrifice on the cross. It is through Christ that we start to participate with God in discipleship , community, and mission (John 14:6).

- Discipleship becomes an expression of our faith as we participate with Christ in self-sacrifice as we are crucified to our own desires and life plans living no longer for ourselves but for Christ whom we are now one with (Galatians 2:20).

- Our unity with other believers in the community of the church is forged as a result of participating in union with Christ (Romans 12:4-5).

- By participating with Christ we have a mission that goes beyond our own efforts and plans. We actually participate with Christ in evangelism, teaching, preaching, and other forms of ministry as opposed to initiating a ministry on our own efforts and energy (John 20:21).

So, when the practice of your faith seems spiritually dry and prone to legalistic ritual, ask God how it is He wants you to participate with Him today. It is in participation with our triune God that we find wholeness in our spiritual lives and in our day to day existence.

Bolo De Passas # Cakes Of Raisins

Novamente Oséias permite que tenhamos um vislumbre do amor inabalável de Deus para com o Seu povo, a Sua noiva. Uma faceta surpreendente deste amor não é simplesmente que o Seu povo é indigno dele, mas que definitivamente não o merece!

O coração humano busca a satisfação constante, mas muitos de nós, em vez de encontrar satisfação eterna no nosso infinito Deus encontramos uma satisfação fugaz em ídolos. Nos dias de Oséias este comportamento tomou a forma de culto a Baal e comer "bolos de passas" como afrodisíacos (Cantares de Salomão 2:5). Nos nossos, é a busca incessante de dinheiro, coisas, status, conforto, o quer que seja.

O engano da idolatria é o tornar uma coisa boa numa coisa deus. O dinheiro não é mau, precisamos dele para providenciar às nossas famílias (1 Timóteo 5:8). As coisas não são más, precisamos de vestuário, máquinas de cortar relva, veículos, etc. O status não é mau, uma vez que devemos viver acima de qualquer suspeita (1 Timóteo 3:2). Somos adoradores e, como tal, vamos adorar. Deus redime as pessoas por meio da expiação perfeita de Jesus do culto infrutífera de ídolos para o culto glorioso do Seu insondável Ser.

Again Hosea allows us a glimpse of God’s unwavering love for His people, His bride. An astounding facet of this love is not simply that His people are undeserving of it though, but that they are ill-deserving!

The human heart seeks constant gratification, but many of us, rather than finding eternal satisfaction in our endless God find short lived fulfillment in idols. In Hosea’s day this behavior took the form of Baal worship and eating "cakes of raisins" as aphrodisiacs (Song of Solomon 2:5). In ours, it’s the endless pursuit of money, things, status, comfort, you name it.

The trickery of idolatry is the turning of a good thing into a god thing. Money is not bad, we need it to provide for our families (1 Timothy 5:8). Things are not bad, we need clothing, lawn-mowers, vehicles, etc. Status is not bad, as we should live above reproach (1 Timothy 3:2). We are worshipers, and as such, we will worship. God redeems people through the perfect atonement of Jesus from the fruitless worship of idols to the glorious worship of His fathomless self.

Este barro é da terra. Eu não sou um vaso celestial. Embora pudesse ter-me encontrado completamente quebrado que pareceu melhor colocar a minha cabeça no pó, sentar-me em silêncio e esgravatar no chão, Ele perdoou e verteu em mim a Sua misericórdia e graça. E a melhor notícia é que fui desenterrado daquele poço escuro e colocado nas Suas mãos, este barro velho e sujo nas mãos do Grande EU SOU! Sou Seu para ser moldado.

É como se Deus nos diz: "Sim. Eu vejo a falha. Mas a falha não és tu. A falha é apenas uma parte de ti. É apenas um pedaço deste velho barro, do qual foste formado, que vive em ti." Ele agarra nesse bocado de barro e atira-o novamente para a roda, ele amassa novamente e forma algo de novo, puxando para cima algo de bonito... Do nada. Isso dói. Oh como dói. Tem que doer.

As Suas mãos já estão sujas. Ele não tem medo de um pouco mais de barro. Ele escolhe trabalhar o barro. Ele ainda está a formar-me. Vou girar e girar sobre esta roda até que Ele decida me pegar e de seguida, haverá para mim o forno, o fogo, a passagem definitiva para o que Ele vai chamar de perfeito. Para hoje, tudo o que preciso saber é que Deus ainda não me terminou.

Esta é uma história de amor incondicional e digna de ser contada vez após vez.

Ele ouve o grito do nosso coração. Ele não exige palavras ou uma confissão ensaiada. Ele só pede arrependimento genuíno e quando Ele o vê, a Sua resposta vem inundando antes da nossa oração até mesmo deixar os nossos lábios.

This clay is of the earth. I am not a heavenly vessel. While I may have found myself in such a brokenness that it seemed best to lay my head in the dust, sit in silence and claw the ground, He forgave, and poured into me His mercy and grace. And the best news is that I’ve been dug up from that dark pit and placed into His hands, this dirty old earth in the hands of the Great I AM! I’m HIS to form.

It’s as if God tells us, "Yes. I see the flaw. But the flaw is not you. The flaw is only a part of you. It is only a piece of this old earth, of what you’ve been made from, that lives in you." He takes that lump of clay and He throws it again onto the wheel, He pushes out and forms again something new, pulling up something beautiful… From nothing. It hurts. Oh how it hurts. It has to.

His hands are already dirty. He’s not afraid of a little more dirt. He chooses to work the clay. He is still forming me. I will spin round and round on this wheel until He decides to pick me up, and then there will be for me the kiln, the fire, the final passage into what He will call perfect. For today, all I need to know is that God is not finished with me yet.

That is a story of unconditional love, and one worth telling over and over again.

He hears our heart cry. He doesn’t require the words or the rehearsed confession. He just asks for genuine repentance, and when He sees it, His answer comes flooding in before our prayer can even leave our lips.

Amas-Me? # Do You Love Me?

Pedro decidiu que não era digno e não poderia ser mais útil ao mundo, então voltou ao início depois da ressurreição de Jesus. Ele entrou no seu pequeno barco, remou para o mar e pescou toda a noite em vão.

De manhã, o Cristo ressuscitado, o verdadeiro Amante das nossas almas que vê o que realmente somos, disse-lhe para lançar a sua rede do outro lado do barco. Quando ele obedeceu, mais uma vez ele ergueu aquela rede familiar de peixes e mais uma vez este homem viu-se diante do Deus Vivo, quebrado como se fosse a primeira vez.

Será que Cristo esperou por ele à beira mar para puni-lo?

Não.

Ele cozinhou-lhe um pequeno-almoço sobre o fogo. Sempre me perguntei quão saboroso deveria estar e Ele falou as palavras mais sensíveis que a alma deste homem já ouviu:

"Amas-Me... Amas-Me... Amas-Me?"

Três vezes, uma para cada rejeição.

Este é o carácter do meu Senhor. Como com Pedro aconteceu o mesmo centenas de anos antes com outro homem quebrado, David nos Salmos. E o mesmo hoje, para ti e eu e qualquer um que esteja a afundar sob o peso e tensão de nós mesmos.

"Porque ele Me ama", diz o Senhor: "Eu vou resgatá-lo." (Salmo 91:14)

Peter decided he wasn’t worthy and couldn’t be useful any longer to the world, so he went back to the beginning after the resurrection of Jesus. He got in his little boat, rowed out into the sea, and fished the night away in vain.

In the morning, the resurrected Christ, the true Lover of our souls who sees us for what we really are, told him to cast his net on the other side of the boat. When he obeyed, once again writhed that familiar haul of fish, and once again this man found himself before the Living God, broken as if for the very first time.

Did Christ wait for him along the shore to punish him?

No.

He cooked him some breakfast over the fire. I’ve always wondered how tasty it must have been and He spoke the most tender words this man’s soul ever heard:

"Do you love Me… Do you love Me… Do you love Me?"

Three times, one for every rejection.

That is the character of my Lord. The same for Peter as it was hundreds of years before for another broken man, David in the Psalms. And the same today, for you and me and anyone sinking under the weight and strain of ourselves.

"Because he loves Me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him." (Psalms 91:14)

O Paradoxo do Amor # The Love Paradox

A princípio, parece absurdo, mas olhando melhor, com um pouco de reflexão, na verdade é profundamente verdadeiro. Esta é uma definição de um paradoxo e a Bíblia está cheia deles. Se quiseres ser forte, torna-te fraco. (2 Coríntios 12:10) Recebes a abundância de Deus dando-a (Lucas 6:38) Perde a tua vida para salvá-la (Mateus 10:39)

Mas o paradoxo bíblico que pode ser mais vezes mal compreendido é a resposta de Jesus à pergunta de teste dos Fariseus sobre o maior mandamento. Em resposta Jesus usa como base em Deuteronómio 6:5: "Amarás o Senhor teu Deus com todo o teu coração e com toda a tua alma e com toda tua mente. Este é o grande e primeiro mandamento."

O encontro torna-se ainda mais interessante quando Jesus se voluntaria mais do que Lhe foi pedido! Ele une o segundo com o primeiro grande mandamento. "E o segundo é semelhante a este, amarás o teu próximo como a ti mesmo. Destes dois mandamentos dependem toda a lei e os profetas." (Mateus 22:34-39) Como acima, isto não é nada de novo, mas é referenciado há muito tempo em Levítico (19:18).

O que é novo, no entanto, é Jesus tê-los de mãos dadas como um. O amor a Deus, o amor ao próximo e o amor a si mesmo se entrelaçam como três linhas para criar um novo tecido de amor!

Aqui está a parte vista de forma mais minuciosa. Se eu me amo porque Deus me amou em Jesus, o meu amor ao próximo será inspirado. Quando eu me amar como Deus me ama, tenho um amor poderoso para investir num cônjuge, família, amigos, vizinhos.

Isto não é narcisismo, quando me "apaixono" por mim mesmo, mas, um amor inspirado por perdão e aceitação que dá uma força confiante de dentro para fora. Ele prepara-me para envolver-me no risco de amar, pois dá o máximo de segurança. Não importa o que pensas de mim, sei o que Deus pensa de mim em Cristo. Posso viver assumindo riscos maiores de amor porque a minha fonte de amor encontra-se a partir de dentro, independente das respostas amorosas ou não amorosas dos outros.

A princípio parece absurdo, mas olhando mais de perto, com um pouco de reflexão, na verdade é profundamente verdadeiro. O amor de Deus, do eu e do vizinho estão entrelaçados maravilhosamente para que como eu sou abençoado com o amar a mim mesmo, o meu vizinho é abençoado com o amor de Deus!

At first, it seems absurd, but on closer inspection, with a little reflection, it’s actually profoundly true. This is a definition of a paradox and the Bible is full of them. If you want to be strong, become weak. (2 Corinthians 12:10) You receive God’s abundance by giving away (Luke 6:38) Lose your life to save it (Matthew 10:39)

But the Biblical paradox that may most often be misunderstood is Jesus’ response to the test question of the Pharisees about the greatest commandment. In response Jesus provides the answer based on Deuteronomy 6:5, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment."

The encounter becomes all the more interesting when Jesus volunteers more than he was asked for! He links together the second with the first greatest commandment. "And the second is like it, you shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and prophets." (Matthew 22:34-39) As above, this isn’t anything new, but is referenced from long ago in Leviticus (19:18).

What is new, however, is Jesus has them holding hands as one. Love of God, love of neighbor and love of self are woven together as three threads to create one new fabric of love!

Here’s the closer inspection part. If I love myself because God has loved me in Jesus, my love of neighbor will be empowered. When I love myself as God loves me, I have a powerful love to invest in a spouse, family, friends, neighbors.

This isn’t narcissism, where I’ve fallen “in love” with myself, but, a love of self inspired by forgiveness and acceptance that provides confident strength from the inside out. It equips me to engage the risk of loving because it provides the ultimate security. No matter what you think of me, I know what God thinks of me in Christ. I can live taking greater loving risks because my Source of love lies from within, independent of others loving or non-loving responses.

At first it seems absurd, but on closer inspection, with a little reflection, it’s actually profoundly true. Love of God, self and neighbor are woven together wonderfully so that as I’m blessed with love of self, my neighbor is blessed with the love of God!
