Vemos uma dicotomia clara entre viver no mundo e viver no Senhor. Temos que optar por viver uma vida ao serviço de Deus ou uma vida a degradar-nos com o que o mundo tem para nos oferecer. Em contraste directo com isto está a frase: "O que faz está BEM, desde que não passe a linha." Este pensamento, infelizmente, permeia o pensamento e atitude Cristã de hoje. O valioso tempo de crescer profundamente no Senhor é desperdiçado em debates sobre onde está a "linha proverbial" entre o mundo e Cristo. Poderia haver 30 pessoas sentadas na igreja e garanto-lhe que a linha estaria em 30 lugares diferentes. No final do dia temos de enfrentar a realidade de que não há nenhuma linha. Vemos isso em toda a Bíblia. Mesmo Jesus disse que é ou um ou o outro no verso de hoje.
Tomamos decisões sobre a vida com base numa linha que nem está lá. Usamos esta linha para racionalizar decisões comprometedoras e potencialmente pecaminosas. Ao racionalizarmos, engana-mo-nos com a crença arrogante de que Deus tem que acomodar as nossas racionalizações. Se temos que questionar, então não devemos fazê-lo. Erre sempre do lado da justiça. Sempre! É da maior importância que entendamos este conceito, para que possamos continuar a crescer no Senhor em vez de sermos sufocados com perguntas triviais sobre quão longe é longe demais. É aquela preguiça espiritual que nos leva a não fazer um esforço para tanto tomar como executar as decisões divinas. É desta forma que nós, pelas nossas obras, nega-mo-Lo.
Como afirma Brennan Manning:
A maior causa única de ateísmo no mundo de hoje são Cristãos, que reconhecem Jesus com os lábios, e saem pela porta, e negam-O com o seu estilo de vida. Isto é o que um mundo descrente simplesmente encontra inacreditável.

We see a definite dichotomy between living in the world and living in the Lord. One must either choose to live a life in service to God or a life debasing oneself to what the world offers. In direct contrast to this is the phrase, "What you do is OK, just as long as you don’t cross the line." This thinking, unfortunately, pervades Christian thought and attitude today. Valuable time of growing deep in the Lord is wasted on debating where the "proverbial line" is between the world and Christ. There could be 30 people sitting in the church and I’ll guarantee you that the line will be in 30 different places. At the end of the day we have to face the reality that there is no line. We see this throughout the Bible. Even Jesus said that it’s either one or the other in today’s verse.
We make decisions about life based on a line that isn’t even there. We use that line to rationalize compromising and potentially sinful decisions. By rationalizing, we fool ourselves into arrogantly believing that God has to accommodate our rationalizations. If we have to question it, then we shouldn’t do it. Always err on the side of righteousness. Always! It is of the utmost importance that we grasp this concept so that we may continue growing in the Lord rather than being stifled by trivial questions about how far is too far. It’s that spiritual laziness that causes us not to make the effort to both make and carry out godly decisions. It is in this way that we, by our works, deny Him.
As Brennan Manning states:
The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today are Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, and walk out the door, and deny Him with their life style. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.
