Aquietai-vos # Be Still

"Aquietai-vos e sabei que Eu sou Deus.
Serei exaltado entre as nações,
Serei exaltado na terra!"
(Salmo 46:10)

Estamos a ser instruídos neste versículo a largar, ficar quieto e estar física e mentalmente quietos. Para a maioria de nós quietude, silêncio e serenidade são difíceis de encontrar. Mesmo quando somos capazes de encontrá-lo externamente, ainda assim pode ser difícil de cultivar a quietude interna. A vida está atarefada e também as nossas mentes!

Não é só difícil ter tempo para estar quieto; é difícil criar silêncio na nossa mente e corpo. A ideia de estar quieto vai contra o que naturalmente e culturalmente fazemos. A nossa inclinação é pisar no acelerador e ir a toda a velocidade, acreditando que fazer mais, e ter mais, torna-nos mais completos. Em vez disso, Deus está a dizer-nos aqui para pisar no travão e ficar quietos. Se estamos ocupados a estar ocupados, a voz de Deus pode ser quase impossível de se ouvir, mas o problema é que muitas vezes vemos estar quietos com Deus como inactividade. É fundamental para a nossa fé perceber que quanto mais deliberadamente estamos quietos:

mais ouvimos a voz de Deus,
melhor reconhecemos a actividade de Deus,
menores parecem os nossos problemas,
maior parece ser Deus,
e mais seguimos o propósito divino de Deus para nós, em vez de apenas as nossas próprias agendas, ideias e habilidades.

"Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!"
(Psalm 46:10)

We are being instructed in this verse to let go, to be quiet, and to be physically and mentally still. For most of us stillness, silence, and serenity are difficult to find. Even when we are able to find it externally, it can still be difficult to cultivate stillness internally. Life is busy and so are our minds!

It is not only tough to make the time to be still; it’s tough to create stillness in our mind and body. The idea of being still goes against what we naturally, and culturally, do. Our inclination is to step on the gas and go full speed ahead, believing that doing more, and having more, makes us more complete. Instead, God is telling us here to hit the brakes and be still. If we are busy being busy, God’s voice can be nearly impossible to hear, but the problem is that many times we view being still with God as inactivity. It is critical to our faith to realize that the more we are deliberately still:

the more we hear God’s voice,
the better we recognize God’s activity,
the smaller our issues seem,
the bigger God appears,
and the more we follow God’s divine purpose for us, instead of just our own agendas, ideas, and abilities.
