Para começar a compreender correctamente o Evangelho, é preciso entender correctamente a dependência. Embora possa parecer uma palavra básica longe de ter valor teológico de peso, a dependência é de profunda importância para todo o crente. O Evangelho é a bela realidade da graça de Deus voltada para a rebelião do homem, e articula a alegria que cada pessoa pode ter em Jesus Cristo. O Pastor Justin Holcomb explica bem que,
"Os nossos primeiros pais no jardim substituíram-se por Deus, e, na cruz, Jesus reverteu a substituição, substituindo-Se pelos pecadores (1 Coríntios 15:45-48)." A minha insensatez manifestou-se inúmeras vezes e sobremaneira. Trabalhei na minha caminhada Cristã professando Jesus como o meu Salvador, enquanto, na verdade, eu nutria a profunda mentira que tinha que primeiro ser "suficientemente bom" para Deus salvar. Eu não tinha problema em falar da graça de Deus para a vida dos outros, mas não conseguia aceitá-la para mim mesmo. O meu orgulho segurava a bela verdade do Evangelho a uma distância de um braço, e em última análise, recusava aceitar que eu era digno do amor e graça de Deus, exactamente como eu era.
No entanto, a partir do momento que acordei na sala de recuperação após a cirurgia, vi a vida sob uma luz diferente. Não podia andar, levantar-me da cama ou até mesmo usar a casa-de-banho com o meu próprio poder. Enquanto estava deitado na minha cama do hospital, o Senhor trouxe Provérbios 3:5-8 automaticamente à minha mente como um rio a transbordar as suas margens. As palavras, embora evidentes, sempre me iludiram na prática e na função. Mas lá, no hospital, o Senhor mostrou-me ensinando-me sobre a dependência, e ao fazê-lo, abriu os meus olhos novamente ao Seu Evangelho da graça.

To rightly begin understanding the Gospel, one must rightly understand dependence. Though it may seem a basic word with far from weighty theological value, dependence is of profound importance to every believer. The Gospel is the beautiful reality of God’s grace returned for man’s rebellion, and it articulates the joy every person may have in Jesus Christ. Pastor Justin Holcomb explains well that,
"Our first parents in the garden substituted themselves for God, and, at the cross, Jesus reversed that substitution, substituting Himself for sinners (1 Corinthians 15:45-48)."My folly had manifested itself time and time again in such a way. I labored in my Christian walk professing Jesus as my Savior, while in reality, I harbored the deep lie that I had to first be "good enough" for God to save. I had no problem speaking the grace of God into others’ lives, but I could not accept it for myself. My pride held the Gospel’s beautiful truth at arm’s length, and refused to ultimately accept that I was worthy of God’s love and grace, exactly as I was.
However, from the moment I woke up in the recovery room after surgery, I saw life in a different light. I couldn’t walk, get up from bed or even use the restroom under my own power. As I lay in my hospital bed, the Lord brought Proverbs 3:5-8 rushing into my mind like a river spilling over its banks. The words, though self-evident, had always eluded me in practice and function. But there, in the hospital, the Lord showed taught me about dependence, and in doing so, opened my eyes afresh to His Gospel of grace.
