Com toda A Tua Mente # With All Your Mind

Enquanto nos esforçamos para amar Deus, à nossa volta, todos os dias, há uma batalha constante pelas nossas mentes. É por isso que precisamos de estudar a Palavra de Deus, para que possamos conhecer a mente de Deus, o que Ele espera de nós e como Ele quer que vivamos. Não vais aprender isto a ler o jornal diário, a ouvir falar no rádio ou a vegetar à frente da TV.

Uma das minhas passagens favoritas das Escrituras é Isaías 55:8 e 9: "Porque os Meus pensamentos não são os teus pensamentos, nem os teus caminhos os Meus caminhos," declara o Senhor. "Porque, assim como os céus são mais altos do que a terra, assim são os Meus caminhos mais elevados do que os vossos caminhos e os Meus pensamentos mais do que os vossos pensamentos." Esta é uma bela passagem na Palavra de Deus para descrever porque a Palavra de Deus é tão única. Porque tudo o que lemos aqui nesta vida tende a ser contrário ao que a Palavra de Deus está a dizer. Precisamos de mergulhar na Palavra de Deus como uma maneira de conhecer a Deus, para que possamos amá-Lo com as nossas mentes.

As we strive to love God, all around us, every day, there is a constant battle for our minds. That is why we need to study the Word of God, so we can know the mind of God and what He expects of us and how He wants us to live. You’re not going to learn that by reading the daily newspaper, listening to talk radio or vegging in front of the TV.

One of my favorite passages of Scripture is Isaiah 55:8 and 9. "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways," declares the Lord. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts." That’s a beautiful passage in the Word of God to describe why the Word of God is so unique. Because everything we read here in this life tends to be contrary to what God’s Word is saying. We need to immerse ourselves in the Word of God as a way of getting to know God, so that we can love God with our minds.

Com Toda A Nossa Alma # With All Your Soul

A nossa alma é a nossa personalidade e sede da nossa vontade. Confuso? Pensa nisso desta maneira. Quando um homem e uma mulher apaixonam-se, eles casam-se. Embora a paixão possa os ter juntado, é uma decisão da vontade que os mantém juntos num relacionamento comprometido. O facto é que a natureza humana pecaminosa frequentemente leva-nos a sermos tentados a sermos infiéis ao nosso cônjuge. E se seguíssemos os nossos sentimentos cairíamos na tentação! É nestes momentos que temos que ignorar completamente sentimentos temporários e, por um acto da vontade, decidir permanecer fiéis. Expressamos o nosso amor através desta fidelidade, lealdade e devoção a longo prazo.

É o mesmo com Deus. Quando damos o nosso coração a Deus, começamos este relacionamento com Ele. Depois, ao longo do caminho, somos tentados a cair em pecado. E se simplesmente seguíssemos os nossos sentimentos, cairíamos na tentação. Mas se vamos realmente amar Deus, escolhemos ser fiéis a Ele, não importa o que estamos a sentir no momento.

Então, como é que amamos Deus com toda a nossa alma? Fazemo-lo com a nossa vontade.

Our soul is our personality and the seat of our will. Confused? Think about it this way. When a man and woman fall in love, they get married. While passion may have drawn them together, it is a decision of the will that keeps them together in a committed relationship. The fact is that sinful human nature often causes us to be tempted to be unfaithful to our spouse. And if we went by our feelings we would follow the temptation! It’s during those times that we have to completely ignore temporary feelings and by an act of the will, decide to stay faithful. We express our love through this long-term faithfulness, loyalty, and devotion.

It’s the same with God. When we give our heart to God, we begin that relationship with Him. Then along the way, we’re tempted to fall into sin. And if we simply followed our feelings, we would give into the temptation. But if we’re really going to love God, we choose to be faithful to Him, no matter what we’re feeling at the moment.

So, how do we love God with all our soul? We do it with our will.

Um Amor Radical # A Radical Love

Os seguidores de Cristo são chamados a ser diferentes, a viver vidas distintas e radicais. Porquê? Porque a mensagem de Cristo foi radical. Amar as pessoas que nos amam, que olham, agem e pensam como nós, isso é normal. Mas Jesus chamou-nos para amar os nossos inimigos, e isso foi uma afirmação radical. Como é que algo tão antinatural é possível?

Há uma história incrível que Nick Ripkin conta no livro Insanity of God [A Insanidade de Deus] sobre um homem muçulmano no Médio Oriente. Um ministério Cristão abriu uma clínica de saúde na comunidade deste homem e, a cada dia, ele amaldiçoava e insultava os funcionários quando passavam pela sua loja a caminho do trabalho. Ele fez praticamente tudo o que podia para minar a clínica, até que um dia foi-lhe diagnosticado um cancro. Lentamente os seus amigos começaram a abandoná-lo até que as únicas pessoas que se importavam com ele eram os funcionários da clínica. Eles procuraram o mesmo homem que os amaldiçoou, cuidando dele e até mesmo oferecendo-lhe cuidados médicos. No final da sua vida, este homem deu a sua vida a Cristo, tudo por causa do amor radical que ele encontrou em Cristo Jesus.

Mas a história não termina aqui. A família deste homem foi tão influenciada pela maneira como os funcionários ministraram e cuidaram dele que a sua esposa tornou-se uma seguidora sincera e ousada de Jesus. Ela foi tão sincera que foi colocada na prisão. Não desanimada pela prisão, continuou a partilhar sobre Jesus com os outros presos até que foi transferida para ser confinada na cela solitária. Mesmo isolada de todas as outras pessoas, ela foi ouvida a cantar louvores a Deus. Finalmente, o chefe da polícia soltou-a e pediu-lhe para explicar o que a fazia tão destemida. Que testemunha!

Vês o efeito cascata do amor radical? O amor de Cristo é um amor radical que transforma vidas, SE formos suficientemente corajosos para viver de maneira diferente. Vais fazê-lo?

Followers of Christ are called to be different, to live lives that are distinct, radical even. Why? Because Christ’s message was radical. To love the people who love us, who look and act and think like us, that’s normal. But Jesus called us to love our enemies, and that was a radical statement. How is something so unnatural even possible?

There’s an incredible story Nick Ripkin tells in the book Insanity of God about a Muslim man in the Middle East. A Christian ministry opened a health clinic in this man’s community, and each day he would curse and insult the staff as they passed by his shop on their way to work. He did just about everything he could to undermine the clinic until one day he was diagnosed with cancer. Slowly his friends began to abandon him until the only people who cared for him were the clinic’s staff. They reached out to the same man who had cursed them, taking care of him and even offering him medical care. Towards the end of his life, this man gave his life to Christ, all because of the radical love he encountered in Christ Jesus.

But the story doesn’t end there. This man’s family was so impacted by the way the staff ministered and cared for him that his wife became a bold, outspoken Jesus follower. She was so outspoken that she was put in prison. Undeterred by prison, she continued to share about Jesus with the other prisoners until she was moved to solitary confinement. Even isolated from every other person, she was heard singing praises to God. Finally, the police chief released her and asked her to explain what made her so fearless. What a witness!

Do you see the ripple effect of radical love? The love of Christ is a radical love that transforms lives, IF we are courageous enough to live differently. Will you?

Viver Para Jesus - Não Coisas # Living For Jesus - Not Stuff

As coisas que compramos são como a publicidade das nossas vidas.
Elas anunciam o que valorizamos.
Elas pintam uma imagem do que queremos que os outros pensem sobre nós.
Do carro que conduzimos, aos telemóveis que compramos e das roupas que vestimos, para melhor ou pior, projectamos uma imagem.

Em vez de fazer uma compra para atender às nossas necessidades, ficamos tentados a comprar coisas grandes e pequenas para contar uma história sobre quem somos. Esta é uma das razões pelas quais podemos opor-nos a usar roupas que não sejam de marca, conduzir um carro velho ou usar qualquer coisa que não seja o mais recente aparelho.

A raiz deste problema não está no centro comercial ou nas coisas que compramos, está em nós.

Não é pecado comprar coisas boas, apreciar roupas novas ou aproveitar novas tecnologias. Mas quando as nossas posses se tornam a fonte da nossa identidade, tornamo-nos culpados de idolatria. Por outras palavras, adoramos a criação, não o Criador.

Para lutar contra este pecado, Deus não nos chama a viver uma vida de pobreza. Isso seria como cortar uma erva daninha do teu jardim pensando que não voltaria a crescer. Tens que ir à raiz do problema.

Para atacar este pecado, Deus leva-nos a amar mais Jesus.

Ao adorar Jesus, a nossa adoração de posses será esmagada e as garras do consumismo serão reduzidas.

The things we buy are like the billboards of our lives.
They advertise what we value.
They paint a picture of what we want others to think about us.
From the car we drive, the phones we purchase, and the clothes we wear, for better or worse, we are projecting an image.

Instead of making a purchase to meet our needs, we’re tempted to buy things, both big and small, to tell a story about who we are. This is one reason why you may be opposed to wearing non-designer clothes, driving a beat-up car, or using anything but the latest gadget.

The root of this problem is not in the mall or in the things we buy, it’s in us.

It’s not sinful to buy nice things, appreciate new clothes, or enjoy new technology. But when our possessions become the source of our identity, we become guilty of idolatry. In other words, we worship creation, not the Creator.

In battling this sin, God doesn’t call us to live a life of poverty. This would be like cutting a weed from your garden thinking it wouldn’t grow back. You have to go to the root of the problem.

To attack this sin, God leads us to love Jesus more.

As you worship Jesus, your worship of possessions will be crushed, and the grip of consumerism will be loosened.

Amar O Nosso Inimigo? # Love Our Enemy?

O povo Judeu estava familiarizado com o mandamento do Antigo Testamento de "amar o próximo" (Levítico 19:18). Para muitos, isto significava amar o seu próximo Judeu, nem sempre fácil, mas perceberam a importância. Depois veio Jesus e levou este mandamento um passo mais à frente: "Não apenas ama os teus vizinhos, Eu quero que ames os teus inimigos."

Amar os nossos inimigos significa amar aqueles que não nos amam, não se parecem connosco, não falam como nós, nem gostam de nós. Isto refere-se a pessoas dentro e fora do nosso círculo de familiares ou amigos, nossos irmãos e até os nossos concidadãos. O mandamento de Jesus inclui amar aqueles que não são a nosso favor, aqueles que nos desejam mal e até aqueles que tornam a nossa vida miserável. Devemos amar a todos e a qualquer um, mas especialmente os nossos inimigos.

À primeira vista, amar os nossos inimigos pode parecer impossível. Afinal, cada um de nós tem uma história que começa com: "Se soubesses como esta pessoa é ou o que ela fez, não estarias a me pedir para amá-la." Mas Jesus foi muito claro. Então, como é que começamos a amar os nossos inimigos? Tudo começa com a oração.

Quando oramos por uma pessoa que nos feriu, Deus tem uma forma de suavizar o nosso coração. Começamos a olhar para esta pessoa através dos olhos de Deus, talvez até mesmo lembrando-nos como Deus olhou para nós em amor e misericórdia enquanto éramos os seus inimigos e estávamos a rejeitá-Lo através do nosso pecado.

Então, "orar pelos nossos inimigos" faz com que o que esta pessoa fez esteja certo? Absolutamente não. Isto significa que vais gostar desta pessoa? Na maioria dos casos não. Mas isto significa que Deus pode dar-te um poder sobrenatural para amá-los e mostrar-lhes amor, não importa como eles nos respondem. E este tipo de amor é poderoso. Não, é mais do que poderoso. É sobrenatural porque este tipo de amor vem de Deus.

The Jewish people were familiar with the Old Testament command to "love your neighbor" (Leviticus 19:18). To many, this meant loving their fellow Jews, not always easy, but they realized the importance. Then Jesus came along and took this command one step farther: "Don’t just love your neighbors, I want you to love your enemies."

To love our enemies means loving those who don’t love us, don’t look like us, don’t speak like us, even don’t like us. This refers to people inside and outside our circle of family or friends, our fellow believers, and even our fellow citizens. Jesus’ command includes loving those who are not for us, those who desire ill will towards us, and even those who make our lives miserable. We are to love anyone and everyone, but especially our enemies.

At first glance, loving our enemies can seem impossible. After all, each of us has a story that begins with: "If only you knew what this person was like or what he or she did, you wouldn’t be asking me to love them." But Jesus was very clear. So how do we begin to love our enemies? It starts with prayer.

When we pray for a person who has hurt us, God has a way of softening our heart. We begin to look at that person through God’s eyes, perhaps even remembering how God looked at us in love and mercy while we were HIS enemy and were rejecting HIM through our sin.

So, does "praying for our enemies" make what that person did ok? Absolutely not. Does it mean that you are going to like this person? In most cases no. But it does means that God can give you a supernatural power to love them and to show them love, no matter how they respond to us. And that kind of love is powerful. No, it’s beyond powerful. It’s supernatural because this type of love comes from God.

No mundo de hoje, parece bastante popular ter uma miscelânea de crenças religiosas, geralmente alguma homenagem a Deus, às vezes uma pequena dose de Jesus (Ele foi, afinal, um grande mestre), uma pequena pitada de Buda, um pouco de Maomé aqui e um pouco do pensamento Nova Era ali. Isto soa-te, bem... tão espiritual. E quando alguém diz: "Oh, sou uma pessoa muito espiritual", não fazes a menor ideia do que realmente querem dizer.

Mas, sabes, isto é tudo fundamentalmente desonesto. É um insulto para cada religião, pois é como uma pilhagem espiritual, uma remodelação clássica de Deus na tua própria imagem chique que se adapta às tuas necessidades. E é um lembrete dos muitos intelectuais cabeça-no-ar de hoje. Toma uma decisão! Mas não sejas falso para toda a fé. Estas religiões não ensinam as mesmas coisas, e elas de certeza não praticam as mesmas coisas.

Jesus disse: "Eu Sou o Caminho, a Verdade e a Vida. Ninguém vem ao Pai senão por Mim." Ou Ele mentiu, foi terrivelmente insano ou Ele é quem Ele disse que é. Isto está em conflito directo com todas as outras religiões. Com Ele, é tudo ou nada. Eu acredito que Ele é a verdade sobre Deus.

Toma uma decisão sobre Jesus, Maomé, Buda ou quem quer que seja. Mas não insultes a todos com esta prática pseudo-sofisticada de religião confusa.

In today’s world, it seems quite popular to have a hodgepodge of religious beliefs, usually some homage to God, sometimes a little dose of Jesus (He was, after all, a great teacher), a little pinch of Buddha, a little Mohammed here and a little New Age thought there. It makes you sound, well... so spiritual. And when someone says, "Oh, I’m a very spiritual person", you have absolutely no idea what they really mean.

But, you see, it’s all fundamentally dishonest. It is an insult to each religion, for it is like spiritual looting, a classic refashioning of God into your own chic image that fits your needs. And it is a reminder of the many intellectual airheads today. Make a decision! But don’t be a phony for every faith. These religions don’t teach the same things, and they certainly don’t practice the same things.

Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth, the Life. No one comes to the Father but through Me." Either He lied, was terribly insane, or He is who He said He is. This is in direct conflict with every other religion. With Him, it’s all or nothing. I believe He is the truth about God.

Make a decision about Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, or whomever. But don’t insult them all with this airhead, pseudo-sophisticated practice of hodgepodge religion.
