O que significa ser grande? Provavelmente a maneira mais comum que o mundo tem para definir grandeza é através de conquistas. Podes voltar à história antiga e pensar em Alexandre o Grande, porque conquistou o mundo conhecido quando tinha 33 anos e depois chorou porque não havia mais mundos para conquistar. Ou podes pensar em Thomas Edison com mais de mil patentes em seu nome. Ou considera Einstein e as suas incríveis descobertas na física quântica.
Outros poderão dizer que a verdadeira grandeza é tudo sobre o poder. No tempo de Jesus, César Augusto foi considerado realmente grande por causa de todo o poder que possuía. No mundo moderno, poderás olhar para os Presidentes dos Estados Unidos porque, afinal, não há posição mais poderosa no mundo do que esta!
Ou será que há?
Na verdade, qualquer pessoa pode tornar-se grande. Talvez não na definição mundana, talvez nem mesmo na tua própria definição. Jesus diz-nos como: "...qualquer que entre vós quiser tornar-se grande, será esse o que vos sirva; e qualquer que entre vós quiser ser o primeiro, será servo de todos." Jesus, o maior homem que já existiu, diz que não veio para ser servido; Ele veio para servir, até ao ponto de negociar a Sua vida para a nossa salvação. O quê, poderás perguntar? O que há de tão bom em servir os outros? Houve um tempo quando os servos eram considerados simplesmente vulgares.
Bem, deixa-me dizer-te, o maior homem também foi o maior servo. E é isso que Ele nos chama a fazer. Nenhuma auto-realização, nada que possas conquistar, nenhuma patente ou descoberta científica, nenhum poder mundano, nem mesmo um Presidente, nada neste mundo terreno pode ser considerado realmente grande no eterno. Segue os passos de Jesus. Serve os teus semelhantes. Este é o único caminho duradouro para a verdadeira grandeza.

What does it mean to be great? Probably the most common way that the world defines greatness is through accomplishments. You might go back into ancient history and think about Alexander the Great, because he conquered the known world by the time he was 33 years old, and then wept that there were no more worlds to conquer. Or you may think about Thomas Edison with over a thousand patents to his name. Or consider Einstein and his amazing discoveries in quantum physics.
Others might say real greatness is all about power. In Jesus’ time, Caesar Augustus was considered truly great because of all the power he held. In the modern world, you might look at United States Presidents because, after all, there is no position more powerful in the world than that!
Or is there?
Actually anyone can become great. Perhaps not in the world’s definition, perhaps not even in your own definition. Jesus tells us how: "...whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all." Jesus, the greatest man to ever exist says He didn’t come to be served; He came to serve, even to the point of trading His life for our salvation. What, you might ask? What’s so great about serving others? There was a time when servants were considered just plain ordinary.
Well, let me tell you, the greatest man was also the greatest servant. And that is what He calls us to do. No self-accomplishment, nothing you can conquer, no patent or scientific discovery, no worldly power, not even a President, nothing in this earthly world can be considered truly great in the eternal. Follow the footsteps of Jesus. Serve your fellow man. That’s the only lasting road to true greatness.
